I'm going on holiday in May and wondered if I have to tell security that I've had a THR incase I set the scanners off with my titanium stem.

I do. Guess it is up to you. In the USA you may also get a nice pat down

Yes tell them before entering the metal,detectors so they will know what to look for. We hippies set the metal detectors off big time! 

Then I am always pulled aside for a seperate hand held personal search to be sure .

Years ago my first THR I was given a medical card from my surgeon for travel but they just ignore it they have a routine by law they must follow. So I no longer bother with the medical card. Just wear proper attire no metal in clothing or jewelry . Also be sure no metal in shoes. 

No wire bra either if that applies in your case. No snaps on pants just a little planning ahead can save time. Just the hips alone is addressed if no other metals are detected   You go thru quickly.  Now with xray the THR implants can be seen at some airports by securiety screen as walking thru the metal detector . Sill security drag me aside for hand held metal search. 

Being prepared red is half the battle getting thru security at airports not really a issue.

Thanks for your advice hope4cure. At least now I can be prepared and make sure I've no other metal apart from my hip.

As you say being prepared is half the battle.
