Sertraline 50mg and Itching!!

Hi, I have been on Sertraline 50mg for 10 days.

I take one tablet with dinner.

Has anyone suffered itching while on these?? I itch all over, it's really starting to get to me as I was up at 1am in desperation, but there is no rash or any hives etc to indicate an allergic reaction.

I have previously been on citalopram in the past and suffered no effect.

I will be calling my doctor tomorrow, but want to know if this has been known before and if it does get better.

Thanks!

Hi iv been on 50mg for 16 days I also itch mainly my arms I also have no marks or rash may be its a side affect.

Calling your doctor and reporting this is a good idea.  I have to admit I have been on Sertraline 50 mg for three and four years at a time and I have never suffered even one side effect bad or good.

Hope you are able to get to the bottom of it!

Dawn

Hi yes the itching is a side effect and its a nightmare. My doctor prescribed low dose antihistamines and a moisturising cream.that sorted it out pretty quick probably a few days. So hopefully you will be OK.

Hi,

I was on Citalopram for 3 years and sertraline for 4 months and from about the second week of starting antidepressants I started itching.

The doc said it must be my detergent, then eczema etc. but I was convinced and still am it's the antidepressants. It never stopped so I just have to use richer skin creams and hydrocortisone for bad patches.

I finished weaning myself off sertraline now to be antidepressant free so if my itching improves I'll let you know.

Thank you everyone!

I've also noticed unexplained bruises on my legs, they look horrific but don't hurt.

I assume this is a side effect too :-(

Hi, it's definitely the sertraline...well, I had it too so I'm inclined to say that! I was waking up and scratching my arms all the time during the early days. I'm now on week 15 and I don't have the itchiness any more. I have had the unexplained bruising too which is so bizarre...wonder how/why it causes that. I had many side effects early on but none of them stayed for very long. It was the heightened anxiety which was the only real challenge as to whether or not I could stick it out.

Best wishes x

Thanks, this has definitely made me feel a lot better!!

I've had a baby oil bath and slathered on a rich moisturiser and feel great so far - hopefully will make the night without itching!

I know this is an old post but, I came on here looking for whether itching is normal whilst on sertraline! My nose, my head and my arms are driving me crazy. Also, I don't feel hunger anymore and I'm pretty much mute in the bedroom department!

Hi,

I have the same issue.

Just wondering if after some time being antidepressant free your itching improved?

Thanks.

Hi, I've been on it for about 2 months. When I first was on it I wasn't really hungry. That went normal. I don't really feel any change at all mood wise. I stay up late and still have moments when I over analysis things. I've looked up the side effects. When my doc put me on it she just said there's a whole bunch of them. I have diarrhea and now just within the past 3 days I've been itchy all over but mainly on my face. No redness no anything to be seen by the naked eye. I also take Benadryl to help me sleep and for my allergies.

I am on 200mg sertraline and sometimes suffer from chronic itching I take antihistamines as soon a I feel the itching coming on... They stop the itching straight away

Hi, I been on it now for one week and the itching started 3 days ago, quite bad. I found interesting info online about itching and sertraline. When using it your brains learns to make a hormone, and the itching is kinda learning process, it is a side effect, but still good one. Because when you scratch the itche place you get a pleasure, and that time the hormone is produced. That's why the itching moves all over the body. Even is a hell the hole itching thing, I fell it good, because I know my brain start to produce the hormone what I need. The hormone is called serotonin. Hope this info will be helpful. P. S. don't judge me, I'm not a doctor, only shearing info 😉 Stay strong

I am dealing with the same thing. I started Zoloft at the beginning of May when I was in the hospital I wanna say it was the seventh and I was on a very potent anabiotic & when I was discharged I continued the anabiotic through a midline for eight days, so the doctor said basically the anabiotic was canceling out the Zoloft & would actually start feeling the effects of it soon! Well, this past week I am up until one sometimes two in the morning. I toss and turn and I ITCH constantly. I talked to my doctor I just feel like maybe 50 is too much for me I would like to break it in half and try that tonight but it’s good to know that I’m not the only one going through this but I hate we Have to suffer at all.
