Sertraline and menstral bleeding

I've been on sertraline 50mg for about 2 and a half months.

Just over a month ago I noticed spotting which has progressed in to constant bleeding, I take rigevidon combined pill and usually take three packs back to back and have done for three years with no problem.

But now I've been bleeding for about a month straight, I have heard this med can cause bleeding and have heard of it effecting cycles... But has anyone else had this?

I rang my doctor and she denied the sertraline would do this, and didn't even see me, just prescribed me tranexamic acid pills to try and slow the bleeding. Any help appreciated.

Hi Hollie,

I have just come across this and wanted to ask you if you have had a smear test before? If you ring your doctor and make an appointment with the nurse I would ask for a smear test better to be safe than sorry! I know this from past experience, please don't ignore it xx

Hi, due to my age I've been refused a smear a few times! Although I've just come off my contraceptive pill and the bleeding has stopped so I'm not sure whether maybe it was a combination of the two? But I have visited a gynae in the summer because of pelvic pain and had an ultra sound. I also have my cervix swabbed and looked at and their assumption was that I have an ectropian cervix and possible adhesions.

I will put up more of a fuss when I got back to uni about the smear but I'm always told the lab will just throw it out at my age xxxx

Hi Hollie,

It really frustrates me that they go by age when it comes to smear tests! It could of been your contraceptive pill causing he bleeding but I would still cause a fuss about a smear test, this sounds mad but I was allowed one because I was bleeding (like you was saying) and my mum had cervical cancer but it's not hereditary which I got confused about so could you get away with saying a family member had it so you want to be sure? It's awful to have to lie to get something like this but sometimes you have to go with your gut instinct! Or refuse to leave the practice?! It's crazy how they can do the other tests for you yet not a smear! They say the younger you are than the more chances of your results coming back abnormal due to cells developing and changing constantly but the next step would be a biopsy to make sure so I wouldn't give up with the smear test! It's always best to be safe than sorry, please don't ignore this though! I hope it all gets sorted xxxx
