Sertraline and Tinnitus—is this temporary??

Hey all,

I just increased 3 days ago to 100mg on Sertraline. I’m feeling awesome, all the side effects I had from 25-50 are gone and I had zero side effects on 75. However, I’ve noticed now that about an hour after taking my Sertraline, I get a really intense ringing in my left ear! Throughout the day I can barely notice it, but when it’s quiet, it’s there. It’s scaring me—if it’s a side effect, I can totally handle it, but the thought of it being permanent is terrrifying me! I should also mention I was on Sertraline for 4 years (dropped down to 25, relapsed and increased agiain) and never had this ringing. I had ringing in my ears about a year ago due to clenching my jaw at night, and it was scary though. Any advice would be great

Hi Diana

Tinnitus is one of the occasional side effects of sertraline. It’s not supposed to be ototoxic but a small percentage of people seem to be affected. I have had T since 1992 and habituated (got used to living with it). I have had my existing T worsened due to  sertraline I’m

afraid.  I  was on setraline for many years but it seems that the change in dosage sent it to the other ear and increased the existing noise. This may not be the case for you as anxiety and jaw clenching can also cause T. My depression and anxiety are better on the meds though.

If the noise is very mild then you should find that you get used to it relatively quickly. It’s just a noise that your body produces is how it was put to me.

Hope this might help.

Eve

Thanks for this Eve. I’m sorry you still have tinnitus. You had it before Sertraline though? It hasn’t lessened at all?

Hi

Yes mine was caused by a Hospital audiologist testing my hearing. I went into the room without it and came out with it!!Hard to believe but true, less to Hospital I stay to try to treat it but to no avail. I’m in my 60’s and lived with ok after the initial traumatic months.

The Sert I was prescribed escalated it and it hasn’t decreased.

I hope you are managing yours ok if you still have it.
