Hi all I take sertraline for gad and severe health anxiety it's really helped but has caused bruxism as a side effect my tongue is always sore with white spots on it where I bite it in my sleep. This is making my health anxiety worse as I keep googling tongue cancer can anyone relate is it worth me changing my meds?
Many Thanks
Linzi
Hi Linzi,
I started taking setraline and after the second day noticed blood in my urine so I had to stop taking it. I am now on citalopram. If it is making your tongue sore I would ask your GP for advice, maybe change to something else. Good luck.
I just googled bruxism and aw that anti depressants can cause it as can anxiety, stress, tension sleep apnoea etc. I saw the treatment can be mouthguards, splints.
Have u seen a dentist about your concerns about your fear of tongue cancer?
You mayhave a fungal infection known as thrush or be a vitamin deficiency.
it does not have to be a cancer.
Sometimes one can get a sore tongue or white spots due to antibiotics killing off the normal flora in the mouth.

I have bruxism too from medication. I've tried to use a mouth guard but it is just a store-bought mold that doesn't work too well for me. You can talk to your dentist and they can make them custom to your mouth and it works wonders I've heard.
For me, it isn't worth changing my meds because it has been so hard to find some that work for me. But if you aren't happy with how it's making you feel and have given it a few months, then talk to your doctor about switch perhaps.
I have severe body image issues so finding a medication that didn't make me gain weight was just as important as finding a medication that worked for me. If this is making you that anxious, then I would switch and see what else could work. Good luck!
