Hi all, I was prescribed Sertryline a week ago by my GP for depression and anxiety: 50mg a day for a week then 100mg for the rest of the course. After taking it first time for a few day a felt like I was on some very weak “ecstasy” tablet ( I did some drug experiments when I was in my 20s) , my pupil got very large, I had this sweet feeling in my body and head full of dizziness but it did not affect my depression state. And I didn’t like it. In fact, that was the reason I stopped my similar treatment years ago.
I know you have to wait for a few weeks for the drug to properly kick in but.. I decided to brake pill in half so now its 25mg and I take it this half a pill every second day and I actually feel better..do you think its just a psychological effect or it is possible for some people to take lower dosage to help with depression. I also take valium time to time, maybe every second day, it was not prescribed by my doctor but it really helps my mood swings.
Hi John,
I am fairly new Sertraline myself, day 12. I started on half a 50mg too. Just to ease my mind, I must admit I was waiting for the side effects especially after a bad experience on Prozac. I was fine though, I felt sleepy on the first day (I started taking my tablets at 2 in the afternoon). Yawning made me feel sick, but generally I felt good. It wore off then after 6 days I decided to go to a full tablet. I felt weird, justn as I did with the first tablet. I couldnt sleep and woke up at midnight, feeling very restless, I wasnt going to take the full pill the next day.
But I woke up feeling okay, decided to take the whole pill again. And I didnt feel half as bad.
What helped reassure me was the fact they give these tablets to children. So they can't be too bad on our adult bodies. I also try and keep myself busy after Ive taken the pill, I try not to sit around waiting for some effect or feeling to take hold.
A doctor told me how good Sertraline is, he said its more refined, been worked on alot and is more expensive than the generic prozac. He assured me I will feel better on these.
Its day 12 and I do feel slightly anxious but I am willing to give it time to work.
My advice is get through these side effects and take the pills at your own pace. Just keep busy.
Good Luck
I was prescribed 25mg for two weeks, and then to double up to a full pill at 50mg after that.
When I started taking the full pills though I felt dreadful - quite similar to how you described, like I was on drugs or something. So now I only take half a pill everday and I'm fine, I occasionally miss pills too and haven't noticed it makes any difference. If it's making you feel better and you're not taking MORE than you should, then I can't see it doing harm.
I'm on sertraline 9 months. Currently on 150mg dose and it works great on my anxiety as well on my depression.
All side efects will vanish for few weeks max.
depression and anxiety are very comon side efects of this medicine
