Severe anxiety and panic

Hello ladies, I doubled my dose of utrogestan over three months ago but over last few weeks have been a wreck - so much adrenaline I'm not functioning. My consultant told me to halve the dose again but it could take a while to work (I went back to my original dose on Monday). I thought progesterone was supposed to make you relaxed? Am I abnormal? I was fine over a month ago and now I feel like I'm going to die, if anyone has been through something similar please talk to me - I'm terrified.

Hi Pamela,
What is the milligram of progesterone you are taking? Are you taking it at night before bedtime? Some women can’t tolerate a high milligram. I tried 200 mg once and it didn’t agree with me at all. Now I’ve been on 100mg and do just fine. I’m post menopausal and on pellets now that include testosterone and estrodial .

Thank you Jude! I was on 200mg taken at night for 21 out of 28 days, plus 100mcg Estradot patch. Now I’ve gone back to 100mg Utro at night for 21 days each cycle, which I felt good on before. I’m taking HRT for PCOS and PMDD (I’m 33).
Thanks for saying that you also had difficulties with the higher dose, makes me think that I might be able to overcome this and feel like me again one day. I’m just confused becuase if it is the progesterone increase I don’t understand why it would suddenly affect me after 4 months of being on the higher dose.

Pamela,
I think your still very young and its hard to fine tune hormones when your body is still having periods and probably producing plenty of them. So by adding hormones is a real guessing game especially fir doctors that really don’t have a clear picture to begin with.
For me i started hormone replacement after having missed 5 periods. I was also 55 years old so my body was not going to make hormones like it use to. But in saying that i switched to a holistic dr who had 22 years experience as a general doctor before going into the holistic field. He studied and knew what goes on with men and women as we age and the right kinds of hormones and supplements needed to stay healthy and happy. Balancing is key for you and lab work regularly done. General drs in most cases are not well versed in this area. You may have a bumpy road until your periods wrap up for good. That may be many years from now. I started peri at 42 and my periods didn’t stop until 55. But in saying this I still think a holistic or alternative doctor could get you on a better road right now. I’ve been following your postings for awhile and your quality of life should be much better than you 've been having. Holistic or alternative drs are not covered by insurance but its something you might want to consider even temporarily to see if they can get you on better grounds. Good luck!

Sorry Pamela I thought you were a different poster on the board . I see this was your first posting . I still go along with everything I posted. Good luck!

hi dont be scared utrogestan is a good progesterone but i was the same on oral i have 200mg vaginal day one to ten of each month i am so much better sometimes a bit anxious on day 7 but nothing like the oral hope this helps my sympathy to yoy

No worries and thanks so much for taking the time to write to me. All I know is I felt well on the dose I was on before - it’s scary not knowing what’s causing what.
I think you might be onto something with the holistic approach - can you recommend anyone? I live in London.
And how are you doing? Hope you haven’t felt the way I have recently! X

Thank you Joanne! So Utrogestan can cause anxiety? I kept hearing it did the opposite!
I’m glad you have found something that works for you  Hope you are feeling much better? Hugs to everyone who has experienced this X

Pamela,
I live in the states but I would think you should have access to holistic drs too. One way to find them is searching your area online or calling your pharmacy, preferably a compounding pharmacy in your area. They should be of help to you to locate one too.

yes it can i am progesterone intoletant try 6 brand finally the suppostrie work trouble is with hormones can flutuate up down . did you go into early meno ? x

Hello Jude,
That’s very kind of you and I’ll look into that  My plan was to look at alternatives once I had got the worst symptoms under control, and they were under control for a while after starting HRT - v frustrating and confusing journey!

It must have been exhausting to try 6 different brands!! I was lucky to have had a good reaction on my first regime - the problems appear to have started after changing the dose of Utrogestan. Last year I tried 100mg of it per night for just 10 days out of the 28, and my reaction was v similar: unbearable anxiety, but back then I figured it was because I had too much estrogen.
The doctors seem to think my symptoms are caused by PCOS ( which I’ve been diagnosed with through blood tests and scans) rather than peri, but it can be difficult to know exactly what’s going on!
I really appreciate you writing to me  This is such a good place to share!
Did you by any chance find that Utrogestan took a while to build up in your system?

aww i so feel for you so young to have all this happening . you do need to give it a few months it is hard to balance oestogen level and utrigestan but give it time also remember to work with your GP write a symptom diary utrogestan is a natural one so best to try get the right balance xx

this site help me were i am now spoke to a lady who on same combo as i am now and i feel great x

Thanks so much for being so lovely Joanne :0) I’m lucky in many ways but I’m not exactly winning the HRT lottery right now  I’m keeping a diary and am aware it could possibly take months to settle, it’s just hard managing it in the meantime X

aww i understand so hard with our hormones you sound as though you are try hard and i so sympathise i was 37 early meno my son was 5 and i had all these terrible symptom worst being anxeity and palpitations and they were treating me for panic attacks wasnt until a lovely gynacologist spotted the classic symptoms and she ran some bloods were i had such low oestrogen & progesterone . as soon as i went on oral hrt I was ok but when i hit my fiftys they needed me to change to patch and more natural type that when I got an in balance and took couple years to balance also we all individuals what work for one doesnt work for another x

I’m so glad you had support and found out what worked for you :0) It’s great to hear stories about coming out the other side!
Urgh, I get palpitations too and I think they got worse when I increased the dose, but it’s hard to tell what causes what!
Just out of curiosity, had you had any problems with panic attacks before meno? Obviously none of my business and you don’t have to answer!

no you ask away yes i do have anxeity any way social anxeity but so many of us do these days the world we live in …i self help i am older than you but in my twenty thirtys worse i gave up alcohol 13 years ago never drank heavily just wine with your r freinds but alcohol affects hormones i drink lots camomile tea helps and rescue remedy for social situations …life is tough now and being kind to one self is hard good we have mindful apps classes and self help books so not all hormones xx

I am on the same progesterone and indeed it can make you anxious. Firstly progesterone can raise your available estrogen, so if estrogen dominant it can make it worse. There is also a link between progesterone and cortisol (Stress hormone). I remember when I only used progesterone, no estrogen (Start of peri that was) omg after a while I was a mess, lots of anxiety and I had a lot of water retention etc. Its really a fine balance. I also can not take it orally as it get more side effects from it, 200 mg orally knock me out, like it literally feels like going under a GA! So I insert them vaginally at night. 100 mg should be enough especially if you take it 21 days. 200 mg if you only take them for 10 days a month. I cant take them too long as I get side effects after a few days already, and I vary my dose depending on how i feel, if my estrogen is high (I am on pellets) then I feel I can take 100 mg followed by a few days of 200 mg. If its on the drop, the pellet that is, 100 mg only. The progesterone is really to protect the uterus (get a period or stop it from getting too much lining), so you could by rights vary depending on how you feel  Also 100 mcg Estrogen Patch is not that much, I know of people that wear 2 patches (myself included before the pellets) so the 100 mg definatley is suffice

Hello Manuela,
Thanks so much for your kind and informative words  That’s really explained a lot - I now have hope that maybe I’m not going completely insane after all!  Thank you
I hope you have found a balance now? I’ve gone back to 100mg, only been on this dose for a week though so could take time, plus I may be getting withdrawal after halving the dose!!
