I know sometimes but not always,I tend to get them more after I've overdone it way more than my usual activities.
My thigh spasms started in 1991, and since then I've had many, many spasms. It has taken me that long to try and figure out what is causing them and how to prevent them. First I would just suffer and pray for it to end. My physical therapist called it active insufficiency, or muscle contracting while over-shortened. To me, this makes sense because they always happen after I've been sleeping in the fetal position, which would cause the muscles in my legs to become over-shortened. That is why I stretch my legs out before I roll over or try to get up out of bed or off the couch. I've talked to several physical therapists before I found one who said he knew exactly what was happening.
I also suffer from these much more frequently recently. Mine were primarily in my calves but have become much more frequent on my lower legs above the ankles on the outside of leg. if you feel the pain coming and try to strech it immediately intensifies. Theres nothing that i know that will stop it from coming on. I have taken teaspoons of mustard, tonic water and pickle juice which all seem to work but must be used in combonation with bengay or minut-rub or something like that. Pain will go away but usually takes 10 minutes or so for you to feel the muscles start to relax.Good luck to everyone who suffers from this.
I get those too above the ankles on the outside. The only thing that helps me is to get up and walk it out. Stretching doesn't do any good. I asked my physical therapist about it and she said there was nothing I could do about that. She said it was the Achilles.
My spasms are directly in the quads & have to be massaged deeply or a rolling pen has to be use on it to loosen the muscle that has tightened and will not release.
I get thigh spasms but they have always been inner thigh. Your spasms don't sound too good either.
Woke up again today with horrible excruciating muscle pain in front of my shin & front upper thigh. Was so bad I cried for a good 10 minutes.
I thought they would never go away.Passing out would be a blessing when these happen because they are so unbearable.
I found out this is related from nerve being pinched in back from degerative disk. Unfortunate that doctors suggest surgery but I continue PT & getting massages.
Have other people had this kind of nerve damage in the spine? I used to have awful backache but after doing pilates it went away and hardly bothers me now. It has got me wondering if nerve damage has occurred though causing the monster cramps.
They told me surgery would help
Ich habe MS und mein Neurologe hat mir empfohlen, Tonic Water zu verwenden, das Chinin enthält. Es schmeckt schrecklich, hilft aber.
I get these at night, inner thighs, feet & ankles, worst pain I have ever felt. I do have spine issues, didn't think it was related but sounds like it is. Been to my primary several times for this as well as neurologist , neither seem to know what's causing it. Was prescribed gabapentin, but who wants to take another pill just to sleep at night, not to mention this makes me groggy and is normally used to treat restless leg syndrome .
At night I'm afraid to move at all and forget trying to stretch at all the springs them on . I recently tried doing Pilates can't do that either that also brings them on . It's got so bad over the past week, every night what seems like every hour I woken up with the start of one, I have to jump up out of bed to walk around to make it go away . I also now have to avoid certain activities for the fear of one coming on, which they do during this activity which is quite embarrassing.
I work out pretty much everyday, I started to think it was by sweating daily with my workout routine did seem to increase the frequency of them, but I don't want to stop working out. My primary did put me on a daily dose of potassium as well as magnesium, the magnesium helped for a short time but no longer does . I'm at a loss like you
Wow, I'm sorry to hear that this happens to you so often, now & then is horrible enough. I doubt if its the exercise, I am overweight & somewhat sendentary.Just doing everyday task feels like a workout for me, although it does seem to happen more when I've had to stand for prolonged periods but not always, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to what causes them. One thing we all agree on is they are the most excruciating pain. I hope we get some answers to what actually causes them so we can try to prevent them.
Good luck - I have found by sleeping with your legs straight out as opposed to the fetal position theres a much less chance of me cramping up. Its not easy for me since i have several issues with my back. Also the tonic water with quinine seems to be the biggest help. Ive on had about 3 cramps in the last 2 weeks ,and by drinking the tonic had 1 loosen up within 2 minutes.I have never had relief that quickly, ever.
Yes, keeping your legs straight does seem to help some so far, what kind of tonic water & where do you buy it?
Vintage or Refreshe tonic water with quinine at ACME food stores.
Hey to ya'll ... After reading most of the messages that have been posted, I'm surprise to see that no one have brought up the diagnosase of "Stiff-mans Syndrome" ... Yes, this is a real Disease, and while it's a " One in a Million" type problem, that is what I have ... Please, check into this, and you'll find that about the only thing that works to stem the onset of this is Valium. It started to me when I was about 45, and while trying to explain the extrem PAIN that occures to Drs., they mostly just went "Hum" and did nothing. Thank the good Lord for the Internet ... After reading-up on this, I took copies of what I found to my Dr., and now he's a believer. So check into this, and let me know what you think. I'm also a EMT, and have been searching for info. on this for a LONG time ... They do have 'site' that address this issue, so as you are awear, you are not alone. Valiume DOES work for me, most of the time ... Trust me, I know the pain, and the tears ya'll are going through ... God Bless, OHB
Oh thank the lord im not the only one who suffers from these cramps. They cramp right into my groin n i feel as though my muscle is been pulled tighter n tighter . If i feel a cramp coming on in bed i try to stretch it out. If i miss it n get the cramp i try get out of bed n climb into the bath and turn the cold tap on i pour as much ice cold water over the whole of my leg n groin and that seams to help
Hello Everyone, I have just joined the forum.
I have been speaking with my various doctors for years about leg cramps, including inner thigh cramping, which is the worst pain of all.
A physiotherapist identified it as out-of whack electrolytes a few years ago, and I began using various preparations on the marker to replace electrolytes. I have indeed found that when i sweat more, or don't drink enough water/liquids during the day, the cramping is worse at nights.
A few years ago, however, I came across a home-remedy which has worked like a charm for me-
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup water (cold or room temperature)
I keep a bottle with this mix in the fridge, and whenever I get a severe cramp, I reach for my "magic mix". It works for me every time! I gulp down about 1/4 cup. (it's not very pleasant-tasting). If it does not work immediately (which it does most times), I take another 1/8 cup. You can adjust the amount of water to make it strongr or weaker. I stopped buying the other stuff when I found this solution.
I also drink a lot of coconut water (young nuts), which contains electrolytes, and just generally keep myself hydrated with water and other non-sweet, non-gassy drinks. (I live on an a tropical island, so cocunuts are readily available!
I am currently doing blood tests to pin down the exact nature of the deficiency, so that the endocrinologist can try to treat it definitively. In the meantime, he has recommended quinine, (which I am very reluctant to take) in the hope of providing me with a more permanent solution. (The 'magic mix' is not a permanent solution. It's episodic)
I hope this helps.
How long before this homemade remedy works? I've thought all along that not drinking enough water & overworking my muscles was my problem.Someone said to stretch your legs straight out before getting out of bed & that helps sometimes.Thank You for your suggestion,I will try it( probably at room temperature.)
P.S.
When Walmart used to sell leg cramp pills with quinine, they almost always helped.
