Sharp pain down operated leg?

Hi all, I am 32 and had a LTHR just over 4 weeks ago. In th e last week I have started having shooting pains mostly down my shin and ankle on my operated leg. It has been fine until now. Sometimes I have it in my groin as well. My knee on the same leg hurts like hell as well. I k ow most of it is part of the healing process but it is a pain. When i'm trying to get to sleep and my leg is aching so much. I am taking 2 Tramadol every 4 hrs as well as paracetamol and ibrufin which all helps. Has anyone had similar experiences and how long roughly does it last?

Kind regards

Mike

Hi sadly one seems to get all sorts of pains mine was and still is sometimes in the calf, groin and butt. Think it is the healing process and we need to be patient

Hi Michael, I Am also 4 weeks post op but a bit older than you. (63).

I have found that the pain and bruising has travelled down my leg, thigh then knee then calf and currently have swollen and painful ankle along with yellow bruising.

I think we all heal differently but reading the forum shows that the op throws up some odd aches and pains for months after. I am trying to lay off tramadol but really need my cocodamol. Listen to your body and rest when needed, medicate when needed and be patient with yourself. Good luck.

Hi Michael I had that on my unoperated leg post op for a couple of weeks, I now think it could have been a nerve touched by the spinal block when it was put in which took a while to settle however if you have got extreme pain maybe you need to get it checked out.

Hey Michael,

sorry to hear your going through such a rough event. I'm 35 from New Zealand and had my LTHR done on 9th March 2015. I think it sounds like a nerve might be the problem here as I never experienced that during my recovery but it does depend on the surgeon and anaethetist that do the op and how experienced they are. I hope you get better bud. Just as an example I will tell you how my recovery has been and still going. I had my op and the next day was walking albeit not very far.

I was off crutches after 2 weeks as surgeon advised me to get back to normality as soon as possible. I'm a solidly built guy but I have a physical job which I suppose has helped immensely with my recovery as I could tell after five weeks my range of movement was about 75-80% of what it was before. After four weeks I got married and unaided and all my family asked where my crutches were and I said I don't need any.

i wear compression pantyhose when I do exercises to help aid blood flow especially if I'm going to be on my feet all day. I mowed the lawn the other week with no pain and got the all clear from my surgeon to resume normal work duties just last week so back to work soon.

As for your pain, I would get that seen to and see what the cause is and get it rectified as soon as possible cos it could hinder your recovery and healing could take a lot longer than expected. All the best for your recovery Michael.

Yes I got shooting pains down to my knee and shin, I just took painkillers and seemed to go away. Now 7wks and don't seem to get it now?

I hope that's the case for me Tracy. :-D It's just a bit weird as one minute I'm fine and the next I'm jumping then fine again. I hope you're recovery keeps improving.

Kind regards

Mike

Yes that's exactly what it was like. I'd be sitting quite comfortable then bang almost like a spasm, electric shock kind of think. Gone as quick as it came! Hope it improves for you too

Take care x

Exactly Tracy, it's just annoying! My Wife will look at me and say "Are you alright Mike"? Whilst I'm holding my leg like I've been shot! :-/ Good luck with your recovery and thanks for your reply.
