Sharp upper leg pain 1 month after THR

I am only about a month out of THR.  I was pushing myself back on a chair a few nights ago and felt a sudden sharp upper thigh pain.  That night the on call MD was here in my flat today that it looked like I had an infection.  His nurse gave me an injection and he wrote me a script for Cipro for 10 days.  The pain continues when I get in and out of bed, sometimes intense, very sharp.  I have an impending appointment with my surgeon in a couple of weeks anyway.  Funny thing is that I was walking a mile or so a day but right now am restricting myself to bed rest.  Like normal, I worry.  Any ideas?

Dear Ducksoup

Seems strange that the sudden sharp pain has anything to do with an infection. If it was a slow increase in discomfort I could better understand the logic.

IMO and of course I could be wrong is that due to the muscles still recovering your ball and socket came apart like a partial dislocation. This could very easily have produced a sudden sharp pain but I would have expected you to have felt a bit of a jolt.

I would take things steady for a week or so but continue with your exercises but do not over over push yourself. When walking do use both crutches.

Good luck and please let us know how you are doing and the outcome.

Richard

Thanks   The alleged infection symptoms were over a week.  At first the sensation of warmth around the incision area and the Doc said it was redder than normal.  I am more apt to select the choice of healing muscles.  In the interim I will continue with the antibiotics just in case.  Cipro never hurt anyone

When was you walking the mile before or after the op

I was walking much more than that off and on.  Since my 20’s I have been extremely physically active.  Running, gym/weights, cycling, walking, and swimming.  I had to give up cycling three years ago when my bicycle falls finally took a toll on my spine, causing stenosis.  I then took up swimming, about an hour a day.  Of course, while walking around town I have tripped and fallen a number of times.  The way my MD explained it is that at some point I had a minor crack in my hip and after enough time, it finally gave, and with sudden extreme pain and increasing disability.

Now back daily walking while waiting for permission to bicycle and swim.  The GP was exactly correct with the infection diagnosis, now cleared up.  We took photos daily under the same lighting.  Redness gone but have cramps on and off all night, and leg soreness that is probably due to muscle and nerve repair

Dear Ducksoup

That is excellent news.  If you have leg cramp then a simple and effective remedy is to drink a glass of tonic water that contains quinine before bedtime or take a quinine tablet each night.

Cheers, Richard

Leave it to a Brit (whose ancestors invented tonic) to think of this.  Thx

But the good things that it works right away so I do not take it unless I actually need it.

Cheers, Richard

My doctor has prescribed quinine sulfate which is brilliant and stronger than tonic water.

Dear Ptolemy

Glad that you find it works for you. I find that one glass of tonic water is as effective as one 300mg tablet of QS which I only take when the need arises.

Cheers, Richard

I actually hate tonic water so it is quinine sulfate for me.
