Shoes

Hello

I was wondering what sort of shoes everyone is wearing once out of the cast?

i am in sneakers / and sometimes Keen boots.

Still hurts .

Any other ?

Thanks!

No doubt about it - get Skechers Performance Women's Go Walk Slip-On Walking . Someone recommended them to me and I’m still using them and feeling 100 percent 2 year’s out.  Get them!  And re your ankles guys- this too shall pass. It’s a major inconvenience but there’s life on the other side.  Hang in there!

Great Question! I hope to start wearing shoes in about 2 weeks. My foot sure doesn’t like the hardness of the boot or the few steps I’ve taken without boot on a hard floor, painful. Carpet not so bad. I’m guessing my ankle will need support but will be craving soft. Any other suggestions on shoes and how to make the transition between boot and shoes?

Thanks-I’ll look up the Skechers

Hi Nancy,

I went from splint to cast to brace. By passed the boot. My doc gave me the choice. What it did was force me to get a shoe on. Carefully. It didn't  happen for about a week. For me I wanted out of the house and being in winter I had to get that Keen boot on!

Just go slowly. Your own pace and you'll do fine!

Like everyone says, one day at a time.

Good luck!

Rose

Thank you so much Patti! Great choice. I love Sketchers!

And thanks for letting me know there is hope at the end of this. Today was a good day. Yesterday was a bad day. Not sure why they change so much but again, one day at a time.

Thanks again!

Rose

Totally normal! One thing fires up and then it moves to the next. The issues seem to be a moving target. It’s just a sign things are firing up... the tendons seem to fire one at a time. Think of when you exercise and your muscle gets sore- you’re making it stronger. Push a little every day- our bodies are amazing healers - too much pain one day means you may have pushed a bit hard the day before, but a little pain, a little gain each day, and then you move ahead. Progress has to be measured by the week not the day, or it can get to you. Week by week you will slowly get stronger. Be positive. No one likes a downer. Be happy and people will want to hang out with you and time will fly. This is finally what you have been waiting so patiently for- the bone has healed - now you are on the road to recovery! Allow 18 months for full healing, but 4 months is a big turning point. Ankles are the darnest things to heal! It humbles you! Might as well enjoy the down time. Soon enough everyone will need you again and you’ll be on the treadmill again!!

Don’t do high tops- people I know who used them slowed down their recovery. Tight socks and sketchers will work.

I find it funny Patti that when you go to the doc they are quick to just look at your wound site and move on.   Doc: "Hows it feeling? Good?" Me: "Well, Dr .....  I have some pain here and there and well how come..... " Doc... "Your normal" "good to go!" LOL   I love him and want to hit him in the head! LOL

But you come here and everyone has the answers you so desperately need to hear!  Its a scary journey to go through. And I hate that word, journey, but it fits.  Everyone goes through their own pain/ recovery and angst over this. But in the end, we're all the same. We just want comfort in knowing we'll be ok! smile

No Debbie downer here anymore. I had that. I'm over it. Ready to move on...!

Thanks Patti !

I went online to Amazon and looking up the Sketcher Professional Walking slip on you mentioned, however there were so many-#2, #3, #4 as well as one with memory foam and something called a recovery shoes. I tried to read about all of them and the comments but it seemed awfully hard to make a decision.

I had always thought Sketchers was just a fashion shoe so this is all new to me.  Any further suggestions? Before my surgery the only shoe brand I could use was Therafit so I have quite a few pairs of them.

HI Nancy,

That is Patti that suggested the Sketchers. Hopefully she sees your post. I would like to know, too!

Hi Patti, I’m not sure if you saw my post or not-I accidentally replied to Rose-after your advice I went online to Amazon to look for the sketchers that you recommended. They have about four different versions of the Performance Go Walk slip on, version 2, 3, or 4. There is also a “recovery” Go Walk and another one with memory foam. Prices range from $25-$75. Do you have any other advice for figuring out which shoes might work the best?

The one I got was called on Amazon

Skechers Performance Women's Go Walk Slip-On Walking Shoe

Or Skechers Performance Women's Go Walk 3 Slip-On Walking Shoe

Oh and I just remembered I got two pairs in two sizes. One a half size bigger for the swollen injured foot. Good news ladies- I now wear heels again two years later! Hang in there!!!

Sorry guys-I’m no longer regularly on the site. I just responded with the names on this link.

My running shoes/daily footwear (not high top)- Saucony - Excursion TR11 GTX (designed for trail running).

My new hiking boots for better protection on the trail (high top)- VASQUE ST ELIAS GTX BOOTS

My winter hiking boots which I use both regularly and for hiking - Oboz Women's Bridger 9" Insuslated

Everything was selected in consultation with with a fitting expert (two different outdoor apparel companies) with superior ankle support and traction in mind for walking on all different terrain types. No more cheap shoes for this gal wink

Thanks, great ideas

Today I received 4 different styles of Sketcher Professional Go Walk slip on shoes from Amazon. I have a Prime membership so returns are free. First I want to tell you that I was very skeptical about trying a slip ion vs a tie shoe. But what I discovered was that I needed the slip on and stretchy style to accommodate my swollen misformed foot. A tie on would put too much pressure and hardness on my healing foot.

Heres what I discovered:

Sketcher Professional Go Walk 4. This version is different than the others. It has a thicker softer footbed but has been redesigned with a narrower, tighter fit, smaller narrower toe box and slightly shorter length. I liked the way this one looked the best and liked the different cut and way it held my foot. HoweverI just couldn’t make it work for me. If you have a slightly narrower and shorter foot this style will probably work great for you.

Sketcher Professional Go Walker 3. This style was my least favorite because of a thinner cushioning footpad. It’s overall design is like the others with a wide toe box.

Sketcher Professional Go Walker with Memory Foam. This one was the most expensive one by $15. It was noticeably more comfortable and cushiony without sacrificing any of the support and stretch. It did seem to run slightly longer and wider. I kept this one which came in a black looking canvas with white sole.

Original Professional Go Walk slip on. I found this style to also have the traditional soft, cushioning feel and support with the standard big toe box. I kept it in a multi color knit.

The prices for all of these styles vary greatly depending on style, size, and color. They all fit very similarly.

Im confident these shoes are going to really make a difference in being able to comfortably walk as I transition from the boot to shoes. Long term and as theswekking hopefully disparate,  I’m not sure. But initially I can’t imagine putting my foot in anything else. The shoes are featherlight and washable, can be worn with socks or without. And the price reasonable.

I cant thank Pattie enough for recommending these, I think they will be areal game changer!
