Shop worker, when to return to work

I work full time in a supermarket as a cashier my work means I have to lift cases of beer and wines from the conveyer belt, how long would you stay off work, I have been given 6 weeks sick note by the surgeon

Everyone is different but I think you may need more time. You can get another sick note from your gp or your consultant at your check up

when did you have your op

Jane (London)

Hi Marilyn I am the same just got a 6 week sick note I work in a casino lots of standing and I need to get my left side done as well, so I have my sicx week check and qant to go straight in and have the left side done then one to the other, perhaps have a weeks paid holiday just to get the car moving again and get out, after six weeks of confinement. I have negotiated my duties at work with the management and that is what you have to do, see if you can sit, for loner than you would normaly do, now for me instead of supervising I table games I deal cards only, and work in the card room more than the main casino, so my advice is to ask the doctor at the six week check, and see how you really feel, perhaps try to tack on a weeks holiday after the six week sick note is up and negotiate with the management, to see their point of view.

Kind regards Ian.

Hi Marilyn

I think the initial sick note is generally for 6 weeks. Then at the 6 week check another sick note is issued, in my case it was for another 6 weeks. I'm going back next week.

I know that sometimes a phased return is better, shorter hours and lighter duties. Then build up.

I would say dont go back until you are completely ready. It is a major op and while we may feel 100 percent, doing too much too quickly will quickly reverse progress.

Take care

Hi Marilyn

I think you'll need more time than 6 weeks apart from the bending, you will find you don't have the same strength and will have to build that back up, if you can get more time I would, I went back to work too soon and hurt my back which resulted in my having to taking a further month off, good luck and take care

Regards

Vicki 😃

I got a second note for another 6 weeks from the GP and have already talked to work and the surgery re the next one being ticked to benefit from a phased return over 2 weeks. I work in the labs at the hospital I had the op in and was told I would be off for that long beforehand

If all goes ok you might be 6 weeks..just take it easy..mines been 5 months I had a car wreak so they flew me to hospital it's a nightmare that's not going anywere..

Snap I am also a cashier and having same concerns regarding those big cases of beer and multipacks of water. At my initial pre op physio said she would recommend full 12 weeks off because of the twisting and lifting. I am also worried in case i drop anything in that confined space. I am 7 weeks seeing gp week after next. You will get no thanks for returning too soon so think of yourself and take as long as you need. Good luck with your recovery.

Who do you work for I myself work for Morrison's and they have been pretty good about me having the operation and the time need off

I work for sainsbury's. I have had a run of ill health over the last  5 years so lots of time off so was dreading their attitude this time, but they are  being great they know this was a major operation and are not putting any pressure on for return. I have walked up to work a couple of times to say hello and been absolutely shattered when i got home so not hurrying.

I read someplace that if you have a job requiring any lifting, crouching, climbing that you should wait till at least 12 weeks. Please be careful. Can anyone help you lift the really heavy stuff?

Although I am mainly sat down I do occasionally have stand to items through the till my biggest problem will be when I have to do a late shift where once the store is closed I have to clean the tills by sweeping the floor round the till and mopping and cleaning belts and silver's wash down the conveyer belts and the silver metal work. Hope I don't get put on the self service till where you look after the tills and have to reach across customers to turn off their alarms when I finally go back I will go phased return

Phased return with amended duties for a few weeks sounds as if it would be ideal.

It actually is a lot more physical than people think I will be going into self scan training on my return so it looks like 12 weeks for both of us Marilyn

Good luck with the self scanning training I absolutely detest those tills because customers are so rude and blame us if the red light keeps flashing they don't realise that just moving a bag can cause it and nearly all of it is their own fault.

Where abouts do you live Tracey wondered if you would like my phone number if you do I can give you my e mail address and you could send me yours
