Should I get a second opinion??

Hi, I was diagnosed(?) with PCOS last week after only having one blood test where my Free Androgen Index was at 3.1%. After reading other peoples stories about long awaited diagnoses this seems to be a crazy fast decision by my GP. Is this normal? Should I get a second opinion? My GP has basically just prescribed me with Dianette and sent me on my way. As a 20 year old woman who has had one ovary removed already I'm really hoping that the one I have left isn't going to pack up on me. Does anyone have any success stories of Dianette as well? My main symptoms are ridiculous mood swings (mainly anxiety and hunger) as well as acne.

Thanks x

I am so sorry - I have no experience of Dianette to share with you but I find it strange that PCOS was confirmed (as a diagnosis) through a blood test only - normally achieving an accurate diagnosis means going through a number of tests (to confirm initial blood test results), such as an external ultrasound (of the area of the ovaries). In some cases even this isn't enough and a vaginal (internal) ultrasound is needed.

I think, in your situation, I'd like a definitive diagnosis and so 'yes', I'd ask for a referal to a specialst gynaecologist.

Thanks Chris, I think I will be taking it further.

I didn't even really get an explanation as to what my results meant, other than that they were symptomatic of PCOS. And I think I'd rather know all the information available to me, rather than worry about it being a worst case scenario.

Good Luck..........hope you get a quick referral and a speedy appointment with a specialist.
