Shower safely

has anyone been told, how to take a shower after hip replacement.

I was told to sit on a stool and have someone in the bathroom with me for the first couple of times. xx

Hi Pep,

I was told that it was OK to shower as soon as I got home as long as it was a walk-in type. I had a dressing on over my glued wound, and it seemed to be fine.

Just be careful not to slip though. I use a nonslip mat and I make sure there's something ( or even someone!) to hold onto, just for reassurance.

Good luck with it. That first shower after you get home is glorious.

i was told the same as Gillcat and anna, sit on a bath stool and have somewith you plus a walk in shower with bathmat xx

Hi.  I found a showrr stool really helpful.  Depends if you have a shower over bath, or walk in shower as well. I have one over beth, so I used the stool to sit on and then was able to bring my legs up (obeying the 90degree rile) safely.

Hi Pep, if it is in a bath then put a bath mat down, and do not scrub too hard on the wound itself and get out quick, dont hang about as you could easily slip.

Be careful....Ian.

Hi Pep,

i agree with one and all. A bath mat is good idea to stop slipping. As long as you have something stable to hold on to its one of the things you will look forward to every day. It might be helpful to have someone to dry off lower legs and feet.

Hi Ian,

How do you get into a bath if the shower is over the bath? Or do you have to wait until all restrictions are off?

Thanks

Hi pep

I was advised that I could, but best not to, have a shower till dressing was taken off

i put perch chair in shower , took crutch in and took shower cord down from it's fixture so I had control of where water was going

Shower mat essential- even shaved legs.

Dried as much as I could when out of shower then went and sat up in bed and quite easily dried legs and feet

Easy to put body lotion on in this position too.

Pat wound gently dry-  I was advised to use E45 cream on it which stops it feeling tight

Well you just pop your leg over from the knee down, then pop the other over from the knee down, just be careful, you will feel a pull then stop, and go back. if you do feel a pull, but you probably will not feel a pull, this 90 deg rule has a bit of a tolerance to it, in my expierience, but, just be careful, and mindful of dislocation...It is difficult to dislocate a new hip but it can be done by the careless, so just move slow and careful.

Easy if you are careful and deliberate and slow.

 Kind regards Ian.

Hi Pep - I had to wait with shower until staples were removed ... my shower stall is too small to put in a bench - I had a home health nurse to help me in the beginning and also to dry my back and lower legs and feet -

have someone close by just in case okay?  I am sure you are looking forward to it --- good night for now -

big hug

Thank you

Hi Renee,

my stitches are the type that dissolve, and my dressing will be taken off the day after tomorrow. So I am so looking forward to a nice shower. I wasn`t shown or told, how to take a shower, well how to get in to the bath, but I`m determined to find a way to do it. It`s just another hurdle to overcome in this hip journey.  I will have my husband here to help, so i`m not to worried.
