I had a shower last night and spent two hrs drying my cast. I was so worried about having to get a new one today. Inside of my cast was wet....luckily this morning it feels dry. This shower business Is getting me down. I like a shower every day. I spent money on proper covers but some how sometimes water Gets in. Anyone else has issues with this? Maybe I will shower every second day. I hear some people hardly shower at all....just sponge bath.oh I can't wait to feel free again....three weeks to go.
Oh dear, krinny, I know exactly how you feel. That is one of the worst parts of this surgery, and for me, it was being able to wash my hair, as well. I bought on Amazon a "Duro-Med Adult Short Leg Protector" for $12.39 US. Not very much money, it and worked wonderfully. I'm assuming you used an Aircast to shower in, since you could take it off. I actually didn't shower until my fiberglass cast was taken off. My doc said not to get it wet. But I have to say that today I took my first shower without my husband's help. It will be 7 weeks tomorrow. I took my Aircast off and just stepped on my foot and went in.....all OK, except I felt a little unsteady. But the freedom is wonderful. Now I want to drive, but my foot is so swollen. Good luck. Get some good wipes or just sponge bathe, until you feel secure. Joyce
Hi Krinny
I got the half covers for my feet, as they are very big when I put them on I pushed them down to half way down my calf. They fill with air when you do this so I used to take the air out but keep them half way on my calfs, ( the widest part) and I had no trouble.
Good Luck 😁 x
Krinny,
Are you using the ones with the rubbery seal round the top? The one I used was from Lloyds chemist and it worked fine. Just pull it fully on then make sure the rubber seal is high on your calf muscle, higher than the rest of the cover. That way the water in the shower should just flow around the cover. If you have the seal lower on the calf then the water could pool around where the seal meets the calf and run down any tiny gap or when you remove it. If your seal to calf is not watertight for some other reason then try surgical tape around the edge, it should last long enough for a shower.
Thanks everyone for the advice....funnily enough Tettin, finally found a brand with rubber seal(PCP the brand). As the ones I had had the chemist were too fidley. See how I go
No did not have an aircast....just a plastic boot bag...was hopeless. Last night was the final straw as bottom of my cast or inside got wet. As you know we have to be careful for infections. If it was not dry this morning....I would of got it checked out. So sat on the couch with a dryer on a cooler setting. I think it helped that I had a slipper cast on....all the air dried it (thankgoodness) I like a shower everyday but think I might go every second....not as if I am building a sweat up during the day lol
Hi Krinny, it's so frustrating not being able to shower properly! I tried all sorts of methods but eventually the best for me was to use a very strong small bin bag and duct tape the top to my leg about three times. It worked like magic and was cheaper than the supposed medical options you have to pay for! Good luck with finding something that works for you!
