Silent Reflux

Hello All

I have had PMR for just over a year now.  Back in January I got a very bad cold and it was with me for 3 weeks.

Here it almost Easter and I still have a bad cough and alot of phlem on my chest that I just can not shift.

I have been to the doctor's and was given an inhaler.  I have also been steaming with Menthol Crystals.  It just will not go.

Yesterday someone said it might be Silent Reflux.  I have never heard of this and was wondering if anyone else in the group has ever experienced this and if they were able to get rid of it.

Or is it just a side effect from the Pred?

Regards

Jayne

Silent reflux is difficult to shift.  Speak to your doctor about it.  You can also read about GORD (GERD if American)!  There is a forum on here which covers this.

Silent reflux can be due to being on pred. It is common for doctors to hand out PPIs (omeprazole) along with pred because it can irritate the stomach. If you aren't taking one (and many of us don't and won't for various reasons) why not try getting some Zantac/ranitidine and see if that helps.

Here's a link to the patient info leaflet on here:

Thank you Constance I will check this out

Thank you Eileen. I will check the link you put on and will get some Zantac/ranitidine and see if this will help

i am also going back to my doctors next week

I was given omeprezole for silent reflux and cough was gone in 2 days. Doc said if it wasn't gone that fast then something else was causing it. What a relief.

You were very lucky!  I was on Omepresole 4 years. Followed by 2 different (stronger) pills and the acid reflux still hasn't gone.

Hmm - optimistic! But at least it worked for you!

I have had the same problems for well over a year now, and my tests for silent reflux will finally be done next month. I tried all the drugs others suggested, but nothing works. I am fairly certain myself that it is silent reflux. Not looking forward to the tests tho.

I've had terrible painful reflux and indigestion from the Prednisone, even though I take an Omerprazol 20 mg capsule every day.  It's gotten better since I'm now down to 6 mg, but it's been quite annoying and painful for the past year.  The only relief I would get was lying down. I was told it could also cause a constant cough, besides chest pains, too.  Feel better soon!

Hope you get relief soon.

You to Pam.

I am now down to 4 MG a day and mine started in February.  I just thought it was the continuation of my cold.  I'm still coughing and some days it's a little hard to breath.

Off to the dr's on Thursday and hopefully will get some good advise.

Regards

Have you tried any other antacid stuff - like Zantac/ranitidine? Apparently PPIs (omeprazole) doesn't work for about a third of patients.
