Similar symptoms to a UTI but not a UTI (possibly anxiety related?)

Hi there,

For a bit of context I'm female and 20 years old.

Over a month ago I was just sitting down watching TV when I suddenly got a muscle spasm in the genital area. (sorry for the tmi) I thought it was a little weird but just ignored it but it kept happening again and again throughout the day. Later on I think it was, I started feling like I needed to urinate but nothing would come out when I felt like I needed to. The spasms carried on and I feel like they made the urge to go even worse. I thought this was because of the medication I was on at the time (zoloft) as it can be a side effect but I've been off the medication for a while and I'm still getting this issue.I was also only on them for four days so I don't think it's because of the medication. I started getting constipation issues which I now believe to be a coincidence and that went away. But I still have this feling like I can't empty my bladder. I've been to the doctors about this a few times and done two samples for my doctor at different visits, one of them was tested by a lab as well but there was no signs of an infection. I think I'm not going as much either as in I will have a lot to drink but not go as much as I usually do after having that amount of liquids. I feel worse after I go to the toilet because there's always that feling that I haven't been properly. And when I do need to go I feel I really have to go urgently but not much comes out. I've been to the doctors about this so much I'm too embarrassed to go back. Does anybody have any theories? Thanks in advance. I posted this under the incompetence category but under this one as well because I'm not sure if this could be an anxiety related issue. I worry the doctors might say it's all just in my head and I'll just carry on being uncomfortable.

Hi Anomynus that sounds a lot like what I had when I was 11. I used to get an urge to pee and when I went to the bathroom nothing would come out. The feeling would come about every 10 mins and was so embarrassing having to get up from my seat at school every 10 mins or so to go to the bathroom. Eventually it got so bad that I could now longer attend school. I had 6 months off school in year 6 and it eventually got better. I had a heap of tests and they could not find anything wrong then my psychiatrist diagnosed me with a nervous disorder and I do suffer from severe anxiety and depression as well. Mine eventually went away and I am sure yours will too in time. I hope this helps and I hope you get some relief soon. If you want to know more please message me.

Thanks for your reply. I am considering that it could all be anxiety related as one of the possible reasons I could be getting this so that does make sense. Thanks for your help.

I've had this for a couple months now. I'm a 21 year old man I didn't have the spasms but mine started midway through one of my uni exams. Not an ideal situation. I completely understand what you mean though. It's a constant feeling like you have to go to the toilet and pee, then at points it gets so bad that you can't focus on anything but the sensation.

If you are still getting these problems I would seriously urge you to see the doctor again. I have been to my GP atleast 4 times over these past two weeks, had many phone calls with her, done countless blood, urine and swab tests. I was sent to a urologist aswell. They really don't care how many times you have been. All they want to do is treat you, most of the doctors are passionate about their job and want the satisfaction of helping you. So allow them to.

After all my tests, it has basically come down to the almost definite conclusion that this is purely mental for me. I am starting counselling soon and starting floatation therapy to try and manage my anxiety and stress. If that doesn't work then I have been told I will be given medication to help.

If you take anything from this. Go to the doctor. Don't be embarrassed. Please get help if you really feel that you need it.

Best Wishes,

Shane
