Since TRHR on 27/12/17, I've been experiencing lower back pain mainly on the left side

Since TRHR on 27/12/17, I've been experiencing lower back pain mainly on the left side of the lower back. Due to hip problems over the past few years, I have been suffering from back ache. This is my 2nd hip replacement. I think at the moment, my problem stems from only being able to lie on my back in bed. (NO turning at present!)

I'm looking for gentle back exercises. I already do the exercises from the hospital. Any ideas will be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Hi Kelly

Were you advised to only sleep on your back or is this something you have decided for yourself? I had a THR on 17th November last year and the physios, both before and after the op were saying that the old advice of exclusively sleeping on your back for the first 6-8 weeks is now superseded. We were told that we could sleep on either side or on our back whichever we preferred.  The only caveat was to pl;ace a pillow between the legs when side sleeping to keep the pelvis in a more comfortable condition. Obviously sleeping on the operated side will be an issue due to the tenderness of the scar area but I have been side sleeping on the non-operated side since about 10 days after my op.

I would try side sleeeping with the pillow between the legs and see if that improves things

Dear Kelly

Obviously when in pain or discomfort with failing hip you will tend to put more load on the better hip which can lead to putting your frame out of kilter.  You may find that an appointment with a good chiropractor can put things right or at least put you on the road to recovery.

Good luck, Richard

Hi arlowood

Thank you for your reply. Sorry for such a delay. After a while I found it easier to sleep sitting up. I was advised in my hospital booklet to only sleep on my back for about 12 weeks!!! When I was able to turn , it was only onto my good side. Even now i cannot sleep on my affected side.

My back still gives me trouble but I think its a combination of wear and tear over the years and also my body compensating for the hip probs over the years!

Hi RichardKen

Thank you for your reply. Apologies for my delayed reply! I think I may find a chiropractor as although the pain is not as bad, I still feel the aches and pains! I think I need some kind of realignment!

Thanks Kelley. If you have pain then I would suggest that you see a good chiropractor but preferably not a McTimoney one.

Good luck, Richard

Dear Richard

Thank you very much. I think my dad had a chiropractor. I'll find out who he used and hopefully give it a go!

😊
