Skin glue

Hi everyone, so today marks 2 weeks since my THR and I have been to the hospital this afternoon to have the dressing removed.

The would looks very good, although longer than I thought!

The Nurse has said to keep the dressing off unless it starts to 'weep'.

However, my incision has internal stitches and outer skin glue. I now have an irrational fear that the wound is going to open. I wanted to ask if anyone else has had this type of skin closure and if there's anything I should do to alleviate any problems.

I had that sort too. I am nearly 4 weeks post op and initially when dressing came off there was dried blood along the incision. bit by bit it's falling off. first it appears a bit red but fades quick. Nearly all my scar is now clear and fairly hard to see when I glimpse in the mirror. It feels itchy sometimes though.

Mine has been itchy, but I assumed it was the dressing. It's a relief to get the dressing off, and great to hear you've not had any problems. Xx

Kathy, I am now almost 5 months post THR and doing good. I had glue for my incision and my first night home from the hospital, the incision completely opened up and I had to go back in for another surgery and they put staples in. Was not fun. I think you should be pretty safe now that you have the patch removed.

Hi Mark

Did you have internal stitches and then last flap of skin glued or the while thing glued?

Yes, I had the internal stitches and the glue. The glue opened up but internal stitches were intact. There was also a Blood Clot that may have had something to do with the glue not working.

Hello my hippie friends .....at what stage can ya shower .

oh poor you. when the dried blood fell off and it was red underneath I did worry it was splitting but calmed down quickly. thankfully mine seems very secure as I have been massaging it to soften some of the slightly lumpy bits (it works btw)

if you have a waterproof dressing you can usually shower after 3rd day.

Oh great......that's good news....Thank you sandra x

Hi Kathy:  I got my staples out after 2 weeks and it started spotting lightly for a day.  I aired it out at night and put  an antibiotic ointment as directed. 4 weeks post op, I started going swimming.  I was told to put careful as to not bend too far or to scratch it. I was so worried it would open but it did not.  I did not soak in bathtubs and just gently washed it under the shower..

That's interesting to know as mine is very lumpy, which I assume is the dissolving stitches underneath? X

Only if you have a walk in shower. If your shower is over the bath then its once you have seen your surgeon at around 6 weeks. Hence after going 6.5 weeks when I had mine done without a shower. I have had the  bath removed and a walk in shower put in.

Hi auntie beanie

I forgot about the walk in only shower restriction. I live in UK in a council flat and because of shower over bath and toilet being in awkward position so couldn't get toilet raiser around it my other half fought hard and had a brand new bathroom with walk in shower installed week before op as well as getting a new hip. Feel very fortunate right now.

When I was seeing the physio pre-op, she suggested that I order a seat for over the bath so that I could shower, which I did. It's great, I sit on the edge (non-operated side) and slide in. I can stand once I'm fully on the seat. I am only 2 weeks post op now, and even had my dressing removed yesterday, and they are still happy for me to shower every day. I would be in a right pickle if I couldn't! Xx

Yes I had exactly the same. I was told the surgeon used dissolvable internal stiches and glue for the outer. It's been brilliant. No clips or stitches to come out. The wound looks very neat. I occasionally get a feeling like an electric shock, but apparently this is normal because the nerves were cut during the op and are now confused!!! I was told to massage the scar with moisturizer everyday to stimulate the nerves i find this does help. I've had no weeping or discharge from the wound at all. I was very pleased with the outcome.
