Sleep Study. In the Lab vs at Home

My doctor suggested a home sleep study but when I called the center to schedule they sort of talked into a lab study because it was more comprehensive. But on the other hand, wouldn't a home study be more accurate in terms of replicating your actual sleep patterns being you're in the same bed, room, noise level, etc?  I'm being tested because of daytime fatigue and nocturia. Welcome any thoughts or experiences.

Jim

Hi Jim,  I had exactly the same symptoms as you and ended up being diagnosed with sleep apnea.

i had my sleep test done at the sleep laboratory where I think they have the most advanced tools available to diagnose you.

even though your sleep pattern maybe different, it is not going to be the same at home either, taking in to account what they have to do to you.

I just feel they would not be able to achieve the same results for you at home.

After I was diagnosed and started using a sleep machine my nocturia virtually disappeared overnight and that is something I had suffered up to six times a night for most of my life.  It was the best result I could ask for.

Sadly I still have some trouble with daytime fatigue, which drives me crazy but it's not quite as bad.

Good luck to you.

It may be better in an environment that doesn't have factors that distub your sleep such as your home. So try the lab version and see.

Thanks gabby and Richard for your responses.

Gabby -- Do you use the sleep machine every night? How dependent do you get with it? As a single guy I could see some instances where I might not want to use it and wondering  how much my sleep might suffer during those times or would it just go back to my current baseline?

Jim

Jim I do use the machine every night but if I go away for a weekend or a week on holidays I don't take my machine with me and I find I cope ok.

Maybe have a trip or two to the bathroom but nothing like I used to.

if you were to go without the machine now and then or whatever I can't see it setting you back at all.  You just pick up again when you start with the machine.
