Well sleep is getting slightly better!!! but does anybody else feel they have been in a wrestling match with two falls and a submision with the pillows !! trying to relax and then give up because all your muscles hurt well thats me right now !! oh well its tea and tv again !!!
Hi. I’ve come to the conclusion fellow hippies are awake anytime from 3 am in the morning. I’m pre op and always seem to need more pain killers abt this time. So depending how bad it’s woke me I get up to watch tv ( thank goodness for netflix) for an hr . But I hope everyone’s post op pain settles and better sleeping patterns resume ![]()
woke now the pillow help some but I will be glad to sleep in all positions
how much better is slightly better ?
i am just over 4 weeks post hip and sleep is still virtually non existant
but last night i decided enough was enough so attempted to sleep on each side for a while with a foam wedge pillow between knees and it helped so a little improved
my body is begging to sleep on its side so i let it
keep up the pillow wrestling x
i am now 5 weeks post op and never get more than 2 hours max…for example i slept monday night just after 11pm till 1:30am and thst was me till 11pm ladt night…i got sleeping pills from my doc yesterday and just had 7:5hrs last night …the hope is a couple of nights will break the habit of not sleeping…i am hoping to return to work next week but couldnt function on 90 minutes sleep… good luck all xc
Hi slightly better was because i decided like you to take the bull by the horns and try and sleep on my sides !!! to be honest its not my hip thats the problem its my calf and foot on my operated leg are still tight and feel like things are"crawling" !!! I know from last time that sleep was impossible for ages but you do forget i asked my daughter was it this bad and she said it was !!! we are both still in the early stages of recovery 5th week for me
Hi yes I know exactly what you mean! my bed is like a cocoon stacks of pillows a v pillow body pillow and cushions and I still struggle to get comfortable! I am going stir crazy during the day not being able to do much! Tired of the tv etc and if I try to read I am nodding off! ROLL ON NORMALITY
normality ???
what is it ???
have no idea now of what normality is lol
Ha, that made me chuckle.
The times I really couldn’t sleep after each of my 3 hip operations were when it got dark - I had no problems having a nap in the day!
That first 6 weeks were the worst, it’s so tiring not being able to sleep!
Hi Julie,
Yes I am the same, except no painkillers work for me. Got to the stage where I am tearing my hair out, cant stand for longer than a minute or so - cant walk properly even with a stick, and certainly not comfortable sitting ! my last appointment with the Senior Consultant promised me the last prescription of man made morphine would work, and started me off on 25mg per day, but I was allowed to up the dose to a maximum of 500 mg per day. Did not make one iota of difference. Oh for a little respite from this pain !
So depressing. I agree - what would we all do without a TV!!!
I wish you well with your op when the time comes

hello
what is your pain ?
why are you suffering so much ?
have you had your replacement ?
so sorry for you x
Thx Helen. I’m at the hospital Monday so see what they say. My doses of painkillers always seem to dull the pain so I’m lucky. Altho I did try to add in codeine as well and it didn’t make any difference to the pain just made me dozzy for next 12 hrs so giving them a miss. I’m using a crutch which I’d kept from when I snapped a knee tendon yrs ago and that’s made a huge difference to reducing thigh groin and hip pain on moving. I was using a stick which made no difference and I couldn’t move my leg but this crutch has improved that.
Agree the pain is a pain in the bum . Hope you improve soon
Hi again Julie,
I was only wondering if I should be trying a crutch to see if that might help me in any way, interesting that you have commented re the same. Thank you !!
Hi Doodle,
Waiting for replacement hip - but also having huge problems now with both knees, although one worse than the other.
Doctors and Consultants at Hospital have been trying me on all different painkillers but none have made any difference. You name them and I have probably tried them, cant stand it much longer. ( I am in Spain and the last painkillers tried were man made morphine - waste of time !! ) cannot imagine WHY nothing works though. At the end of my tether now, as I have no idea when operation will take place, so hard to live like this.
Pain in buttock - terrible in groin and top of leg and down to worst knee. Using a stick at the moment but may try a crutch to try to alleviate some of the pain, as has been suggested here. Managing to get to the toilet is a major feat !! ![]()
I am 3 weeks post op today and would give anything for more than 2 hours of sleep at a time! With a pillow to my left and 2 underneath my legs I feel like a child playing fort!
My pain is in my quads. I’m not certain If I’m overdoing it, or my quads were much weaker than I realized in my pro-op state. Waiting for my final in home PT appointment this morning. Next week I’m off to the hospital for outpatient PT, x-ray la and to see my surgeon. This is my 2nd thr so I know the drill, just thought I would be further along this time.
PT says 1-2 more weeks on my back, so the game of fort continues!
Hi Helen .i’d def give a crutch a go - my theory is it can’t get any worse lol. I use it to get up and down stairs as well beats almost crawling up stairs and walking side ways coming down. I’ve also got myself a couple of raised toilet seats and grabbers. The idea was so I’d got them pre op but both of those helping a lot too.
Good luck with the crutch ![]()
Hi Julie,
Well I ordered some funky red arm crutches from Amazon and delivered to Spain in 3 days !!
What a difference - less pain overall and certainly groin area is causing me less grief. I really appreciate the comment from you Julie, it really has made a big difference.
Hubby used to do all the main shopping - but yesterday I managed to actually walk around the shop, something I had actually stopped doing completely as in so much pain.Really appreciate your original answer !
Any idea when you will have your op ?
Hi. Great news 're the crutches. I wouldn’t be with out mine atm. I only use 1 inside the house but use it to get up the stairs. I’ve been practising going up on my good leg and coming down on my bad leg which you have to do post op. Before this I was doing it the other way round. If I’m walking a bit outside I use both. Agree they’ve given me my independence ![]()
Saw consultant Monday and op in and 18-20 weeks which tbh I’d expected. Gives me time to do the exercises / some of them pre op as I think as I’m not as mobile I’m loosing muscle mass on my bad leg.
Anyway so pleased the crutches have eased things for you ![]()
