had my anterior RTHR 5.5 weeks ago. Still too painful to sleep on my right side ( which has always been my best sleeping position);.
curious to hear from those who are able to sleep on operated side. How long until you were able, etc?
thanks,

Hi Jillie,
i am 6 weeks on now and for the last 2 nights have been able to sleep on my side, saying that still need a pillow in between my legs but it is bliss as I had real problems sleeping on my back.
you will know when it is right. Speedy recovery Jackie x
Hi. I'm three weeks post op today, traditional posterior op. I was sleeping on my operated side from day 7, although had staples so was a bit uncomfortable. Had clips out last Monday and have had full nights sleep on operated side since, no meds.
Think I've been lucky. Sleeping full night from 6 days, no meds and no crutches about the house. I do however use crutch outside and managed a mile today.
I was expecting much worse on the sleeping side of things, can't sleep on back so glad it all went OK for me.
Hi Jillie
It took me 8 months and only then because my physio did 3 sessions of massage to break down scar tissue...So if it does not sort out much sooner than that think about getting massage - if needed its not something you can succeed by doing it to yourself.
I have since had my other hip done and after 4 weeks can lie on that side but not yet sleep - a big improvement in recovery time compared to the other hip.
If you think about how long you took to get ill enough to need the operation, then the wait to get it done, a few weeks sleeping differently isnt too long to manage. And if like me you have to have several operations you get used to lying down on your back. I sneak anti histamine to help me sleep and am reading a truly boring book - combined they knock me out!
I am 3 weeks RTHR and can lie on my operated side for a short while but not sleep. Still too tender. I'm desperate as it too was my best side!!
I am 3 months out and still have some hip pain fronm the surgery. It's still a little tender so I haven't slept on it. But I still sleep with a pillow between my legs.
good morning Jillie ...
I hope you had a good night with a couple of hours uninterrupted sleep -
I was allowed to sleep on my unoperated side while still in the hospital ... they showed me how to put a pillow between my legs, how to turn with it and position it ... the operated side took longer as it was tender for a long time ... my right side is also my favorite side ...
there is no set time - in the beginning in feels strange - you feel the scar - little by little you will be able to stay on that side longer ... I also keep the pillow between my legs ...
are you sleeping on your left side?
it is up to you, really ...
take care
warm hug
renee
Hi Jillie
I am 6 weeks post op. A week ago, I had restrictions lifted and can now sleep on both sides quite comfortably with pillow between legs. Sometimes, it is just a case of moving slightly forward or back to just take pressure off incision. You will sleep so much better - I really struggled with sleeping on my back - I just got no sleep!
Good Luck to you
I'm 12 weeks and still can't sleep on operated side - I can manage about an hour and it becomes uncomfortable.
My knees are stopping me sleeping on my good side as well. they start to hurt after about an hour but don't hurt on my back so i'm still sleeping most of the time on my back.
Hi, I,m5 weeks out and was able to sleep on operated side at about 3-1/2 weeks. My sleeping habits are not good at all though. been off drugs for 2 weeks and still aggitated when I lay down but I'm happy with results.it is a roller coaster!
I have been able to sleep on my operated side at aroud 5 weeks...Now (7 weeks) it's how I sleep normally, but if I try to rurn on the not operated side, I need a pillow and even then it's not confortable.
Hi, I am now 12 weeks and still too uncomfortable to sleep on operated side - sorry.
