Sleeping on Operated Side

Hi. Can anyone tell me how many weeks it was before they were able to sleep on their operated hip?. I tried last night but no way!! Too painful. ?. X

Posterior approach and was told 6 weeks

For me it was 6 weeks but not all night. I can manage a couple of hours but then have to move onto opposite side. I'm 7 weeks now and it's much the same

It was probably about 6 weeks but not all night.

Hi, It's been over 2 years since my LTHR and it is still not comfortable to sleep on that side...actually it's uncomfortable to sleep on the right side too...I tend to stay on my back with feet elevated.

8 weeks.

Hi lesley, I have tried to roll onto my operated side, but can only stay there for a about minute. Had THR 19 weeks ago. but had a lot of pain and discomfort on the side of my scar for at least 14 - 15 weeks. This has eased but still not happy on my operated side. I am going to try lying on a pillow and see it that sees it more comfortable. So far I have underestimated the length of recovery time from the operation, so I am assuming that, with time lying on my operated side will be ok.. my surgeon said it will take up to a year to feel like I have totally recovered.. apart from lying on side feel fine....take care don't rush., mich

For Mel it was around 7 weeks, posterior approach

About 4 months before I felt really comfortable (ie could completely forget about op) lying on operated side - I do toss and turn quite a bit anyway.

You sound pretty much like me. I was sort of led to believe that by six weeks I would be back to normal but I'm seven weeks and still on one crutch and no way could I sleep on my operated side. A couple of years ago I had a bony spur removed from my ankle and had to have my Achilles' tendon cut to do it. I was told thennit would be a year at least and they were right!! It's perfect now . I'm thinking realistically this is going to be the same. Oh joy of joys when I'm over this I have the other side to look forward to. Thank you for your reply though. Makes you feel better knowing your not alone with it.

Yes. That's how I sleep now.

I was sleeping on my back for 6 weeks , then able to sleep on unoperated side. Now 5 months post op I can sleep on operated side for a couple of hours but after that time I wake and have to change sides. The scar tissue under the scar is still tight and sore at times. I hope this helps.

Thank you. It helps a lot.

Hi, I had 6 weeks on my back, and then I used to sleep on my non operated side. It was about 6 months before I could sleep on my operated side. Now I'm 10 months and I'm ok on it all night. ( Still have occasional twinges though!) Good luck!

A bout 12 weeks !

I haven't had anything done yet. I'm a canadate for both! I've gone to the gym for years and don't know if I cans mentally handle the down time! I have my second office visit Tuesday to see how I've been feeling. I have good and bad days. Someone responded to me thankfully and dont me it was worth it for him to get it done! I'm afraid cause I don't have a great back either. It seems everyone continues to have issues afterwards too! That's why I'm writing this to you because you seem to still have issues! So was it worth it?

I do also find myself sitting more which I hate to admit!!! You just always here bad tho go to about operation that once it's done you can't go back!

Depends .......... I was allowed to at 6 weeks, and found it was all OK.  Then since my revision a few weeks later, I have not been able to sleep on the operated side at all ..... and I'm now over 18 months post-THR.

I haven't decided yet to get the surgery but I sleep like that now. I can't sleep any other way and I sleep in my recliner which my husband doesn't appreciate!!

I just have to say that I haven't done either one yet because I'm scared and don't know how to handle not going to the gym! But I was told its an easy recovery! It doesn't sound like that!!!
