I had my 2nd hip replaced 5 months ago and it is painful to roll onto my side. At what point in time were you able to roll on side or sleep on side.
Hi
I was told at the 6 week check that I could. I was quite nervous at first and didn't sleep on it all night a bit at a time but that first sleep was bliss. Just take it steady and when you try gently roll on to it.
You should be ready now and if you are still in pain there may be another reason see how you get on and get advice if you are still struggling five months on it should be ok but maybe just because you haven't tried it much.
Hope that helps
Julie
Hi, I also have had my 2nd hip replacement in January. I was also told at my six week check that I could turn on my side.
It took a few nights to get the confidence but in the end it was fine, felt sore at first but I still ache from time to time and still get that feeling around my scar area of bruising but you have had hell of a lot of trauma there, so listen to your body and just take your time, you will know when you are ready.
Remember your not in a race. Take care and hope you are well soon.
I have only had my first thr and week two I was told I could sleep on my good side if it hurt to just return to sleeping on my back.
on week three I woke up no my front the body seams to know what it needs ?i soon turned over to my back.
hope this helps?
Hi
I was told after 6 weeks for both sides, I didn't attempt this until around 9 weeks, which is now,I can only do this for short periods, feels quite achy and a little uncomfortable, I'm sure it will get better. Just a bit of relief from sleeping on your back.remember to place a pillow between your legs for support and to stop crossing over.
Nicky
I had both hips done at the same time exactly 3 months ago and can sleep comfortably on both sides. However everyone us different I am sure you will be able to sleep on your side soon but do mention it to your surgeon.
Goid luck

Hi, I'm still. Not sleeping on my side, I have tried with a pillow between my knees but can't get comfortable maybe soon I will be able to. I do wake up aching though, I think it is coming from my back as I did have back problems before I fell and I don't think that has helped.
we just have to be patient I suppose.
Good luck.
Margaret.
Thank you for your replies.
Usually after 6 weeks recommended. I found I was more comfortable around 3 months after both hip replacements with a soft pillow between legs to stop the bad leg crossing over.
Hi Glutenfree,
Have you considered if it is your IT band causing this? Look at Tensor Fascia and see if the symptoms ring true? I'm 6 weeks post op and have pain when sleeping on my operated side ( I can do this safely) but I get a pain in my knee and shin. Surgeon reckoned it was the above causing this and googling it the symptoms were spot on.
Physio and stretching is the cure.
Cheers,
Paul
