Sleeping problems

Hi all what a great page this is, I am 4 weeks post opp from THR, think I'm doing well, I.e. Cooking, ironing, washing up etc, Husband took me shopping a couple of times. But the Sleeping in bed at night is driving me nuts๐Ÿ˜ก, I make my bed just like I was in the hospital, but just cannot get comfortable, I have a Recliner chair, and I have slept in it the first week for a couple of nights.

Anyone know how long this goes on for, also the Stockings Driving me mad.

One more thing, did anyone put a lot of weight on, I know it's because we are not very mobile, but I have not really been eating that much, and watching what I do eat, but I feel as tho I have gained so much Weight , Terrified to get on the scales lol.

Hope everyone is on the mend x

Hi Nell,

Warm welcome to this wonderful forum where we share personal stories and experiences ....

It sounds like you are doing great except for the dreaded sleep and stockings -

You will find tha a lot of hippies here are struggling or have struggled with these 2 issues -

I did not to that extend as others as I was allowed to sleep on operated side while still in the hospital and no TED stockings but Fragmin injections for 6 weeks -

in the meantime you can peruse our Rocketmans' website where there is a lot of information ...

I have put on a lot of weight Nell - Even more now since I had 2 THR surgeries - Like you I don't overeat - there is no candy or chocolate or cookies or even chips I snack on - sooooo boring - but I will get some goodies for Easter ...

it is of course having been so limited in my movements and also blame the medication I am on has weight gain as a side effect -

Haven't been on a scale either -

Please come here anytime you have a question or concern, okay -

big warm hug

5 kg - shock horror! Within a week!? Yes, I know there is swelling around the hip area, but surely not 5kg's worth? I used to push weights prior to surgery because anything awrobic was out of the question. I was in hospital a week and only had desert once. (If I never again have to eat another carrot I'll be quite content!) First day home saw me running to the loo a LOT, so if there was water retention, that surely must have been dealt with by now?

Hi Nell,

No swelling but no weight gain either.  Maybe the two are connected?  But have been shopping today and have just munched 3 Tunnocks teacakes one after another.  So I may also be eating my words soon

But the sleeping !!!  I got 6 hours last night, maybe a record since I had my op 3 weeks ago today.  But up at 4 am.  I try not to go to bed too early but I am shattered by the evening. Not really a daytime napper either.  I'd like to be but I can't seem to nod off.

I am 62 and also week 4 post op and very pleased that I can do so much as I live alone. I have also noticed weight gain and thought this was due to sitting about playing games on my laptop and tablet  I try to go out for a walk once a day even if its just round the block. I am also doing the exercises given by the physio. I rarely take pain killers. I sleep on my back and also on the non op side with small pillow between knees. Cannot lie on op side yet its too painful.

I took stockings off at week 2 as also taking the blood thinning tabs but these have now stopped so I put the stockings back on, in the day I take off at night and I can put them on myself eventually with a little help from the sock putting on gadget - taking them off is more difficult that putting them on ! Roll on week 6 when I will take them off for good.

There is a lot of great help and kind people on this forum. You sound like you are doing very well

Eleven weeks today since my revision, and 21 weeks since my initial hip operation.

Sleeping was a nightmare, until the TEDs came off at 6 weeks, then it was much easier.  I used to lay my good leg out flat to the side, or raise my knees just to get some relief.   Now, can you believe it, I actually prefer to be on my back!

I have put some approximate "when can i" times on my website

Weight - this was always going to be a problem, I lost over 5 stone (70 pounds) before the operation, so I have put onafew pounds, but I am looking to shed it as soon asI get back to work - and I am starting a phased return to work next week.

Best wishes.

Hi nell

Wow you are doing wellโ˜บI am nearly 6 weeks post op, I was suppose to leave stockings on for 6 weeks but have been naughty and took them off about a week and half ago, they were cutting in behind my knee and making my legs dry and itchy, as I was being quite mobile I decided to take them off.as for weight I have actually lost some,;think this is because I didn't have much of a appetite for a good few weeks after my op. the sleeping has been a nightmare I too couldn't get comfy, tried to prop myself up with pillows but still not comfy. I was told not to sleep on sides for 6 weeks but have been sleeping on unoperated side for the last week, I just couldn't stand it any longer, I also had terrible butt pain lol. I still can't sleep on operated side. It is very frustrating.

Take care Lisa x

Hi Annie ,

You can deduct the weight of the hardware !!!!!  I think that is about 2 pounds ?   Hey, every little bit helps ....

Thanks Sarah, you also sound as your doing well x

Thanks Lisa x

I'm sometimes tempted to sleep in an armchair ... My poor husband has been so patient with my tossing and turning ....

That's about 1kg, right? I'm with you there - I'll take what I can get ....

When I was very uncomfortable, to save my poor wife's sanity I used to go to bed in the spare room ... and put on my iPod.

I am sure it weighs more than that - right ?  After all I'm tall, and that stem goes down further in my leg ?   It must weigh 6 or 7 kg ?????

Perhaps not , so I must have put on some weight then.

Hey neil

1st thr 9th dec 2nd 16th feb. I have slept mostly on couch since my 1st one i can't grt comfortable in bed. I will go to bed as normal but by 3am l am back on couch. Guess its just part of the journey. I dont think there is any of us that sleeps normal after hip surgery.

With two THR's that close, I'm not surprised - even closer than my 2 surgeries.  Five weeks of anticoagulants for each, and six weeks with TEDs and restrictions for each, that takes it's toll on you.

Is that all, I'm sure mines heavier.

Drive my hubby potty, because I snore more with being on my back

Hi Nell,

The sleeping is difficult, especially in the beginning, but I don't mind sleeping on my back now, you get used to it. I'm 5 weeks.  I need a pillow under my legs to keep my heels off the bed (pressure pain) and have to sleep on top of my duvet, it's the only way I get comfy.

I didn't have the stockings, I had a massive swelling in my leg though from thigh to foot and it's very slight now.

I put some weight on, but started before the op as my mobility reduced, but I think I'm starting to lose it again as I am walking more again. If you put on it will go as you get more mobile.

Hello Nell,

Sleeping is the worst thing after a hip op.  You just have to grit your teeth and get through it.  I found a large cushion placed under my thighs helped to keep my heels off the bed and this stopped the sore heels.  Also put two or three or even four pillows against the bed head and go to sleep that way, which is more like sitting up than lying down.  I am 16 weeks post op, and can now sleep on my side but still use a cushion between the knees.  The operation site is still irritable and sore though.  This is a long business I'm afraid, much more so than 'they' tell you.  Chin up.
