Sleeping

Tired of sleeping on back!! At first it was easy for me not anymore!! I tried to sneak in side sleeping with pillows between my legs, not a good idea. How frustrating!!! 2 weeks post op

Hi Erika

Do how do you arrange your pillows? I thought I would have a problem with it but I put a firmer pillow at the bottom which I put into the bottom of my back then I put 2 softer ones on top of that then I have a duck down pillow which is really soft for my head. So it ends up being like a pillow staircase. I also put one under my right arm as an arm rest. If you want me to post a pic of how I arrange them just let me know. I've slept 7 hours a night from the first night of being home.

Same here Erika! I hate sleeping on my back but I prop myself up a bit with pillows. You cannot sleep on either side for 3 months.....just as well time goes quickly!

I have found it useful to use one of those curved flight pillows. If I position it slightly to one side, my head drops quite comfortably onto it. Having said that, still wake up a couple of times a night for a fidget, but usually go back to sleep quite quickly. I am in my 3rd week post THR.

Hey hun

I know its hell l got to the stage because it was taking me ages to get to sleep l found my couch much easier to sleep on for a while. Thank god now l can sleep any way but it was the worst part for me. I kept trying to lie on unoperated side with the pillow but with no joy it was to sore. The first time l managed it was on couch as l used the back of the couch to support my back and it worked but not in bed so l slept on couch for another while. Now l go to bed and fall asleep but l still wake up at 4am or 5am and move to the couch. For some reason l find it better. But thats me.

But l get it l had to do it twice with 2 thr's in 3 months.

Be patient hun l know its hard but your only two weeks gone and keeo trying until it works.

Hey Erika

Don't know why my last message never got through as all l was saying was l know how bad it is. I resorted to sleeping on the couch for a while and as much as l tried to sleep on my side it took longer than 2 weeks and the first place l managed it was the couch. And l had to go through it twice as l had both my hips done. Just hang in there and keep trying there is nothing worse than disturbed sleep.

I think it took me longer than 2 weeks for both.

Feel for you hun

Hi Erika

I am having the same problem.  I am almost 4 weeks post op.I find sleeping with my head raised helps a bit - I use normal pillows and a V shaped pillow.

Sleeping on sides not much better (with pillow between legs.)

Also getting up and walking around a little - maybe doing my exercises helps as I get stiff on my back.

seems like a very common problem hope it gets better soon

Karen

Erika,

I know what it's like - but stick with it, your hip will thank you for it.  I am convinced that sleeping on your back ensures that you stay in a straight line and heal correctly.

Remember, I had to do this twice, with just a 4 week gap in between.

I did all sorts of things to ease the discomfort.  I slept propped up, flexed my good leg to the side, pulled up my knees together, used my ipod, and slept in our much firmer spare bed.

Hi Erika. I think we both had surgery on May 3rd. I've been sleeping on my back with a pillow under each arm, one standard size under my knees and a king size under my calves/heels. I sleep with my legs apart, toes pointing up. My dog sleeps on the big pillow between my legs so bringing them together is not an option. lol

But I am a side sleeper, so the last few mornings, when I wake up early, I've been shoving two pillows between my knees and sleeping on my non-operated side, hips stacked one over the other and not twisted, for an hour or two. I can feel my incision pulling a bit so an ice pack sometimes helps me drift off.

Well specifically for this surgery I bought a firm memory foam with an adjustable base. Initially I slept well but not I am up all night and my back hurts. I did try to sleep in my side with those grooved surgical pillows specifically designed for side sleeping but I could feel a pull so I had to lay on my back again. I am scared to try to side sleep again. Thank you

3 months??!!!! Goid gracious

I tried that last night but I felt a tug on my incision, scared me.

Thank you Laura!!

I quit my pain meds, my therapist said to maybe take one before I sleep to help me sleep. I just may try that tonight

Graham did your foot turn in? I walk pigeon toed now on that side and they say it will straighten out once my muscles get strong. Did you have this issue?

Thanks.

Erika

I tried that last night but felt the tug and it scared me

Erika,

Not had that trouble at all - perfectly straight after both recoveries.

Its horrible isnt it ? The time will go past eventually . Big hug xxxx

Good idea. I was on the heavy duty pain meds for 5 weeks. It definitely helps at night.

Hi Erika I have had both sides done, and you have to ease onto your side, getting as long as you can on each time of blissful side sleep..usually an hour for me, and built it up from that, first with a pillow between my legs then the Duvet folded..., but it will take a few months...the pain will push you back onto your back...but it comes quite quick with practice...Ian.
