Tobacco is a nightshade vegetable.  My HS is caused by nightshades and peanuts.  I am in remission after suffering for years after cutting these foods.  Good luck!

I stopped smoking last year Jan 1 2014

Just had surgery for my worst case of HS

Ever... So I'm not a Doctor but I would say it has nothing to do with smoking

Since this summer! I did have a set back at Thanksgiving when I accidentally ate some turkey with some spice on it.  My Uncle's dimly lit basement was too dark to see it and I didn't figure out what I had ate until I packed it for lunch and I saw the red spice on the turkey the next day! I had broke out with inflammation within hours after our Thanksgiving meal. I have to watch everything and be very careful!

How can you know what causes this when the doctors can't even tell me what his is from.

Confused. ...

What HS is

Because I have tried everything and this is what worked for me.  I was in stage 4 and my dermatologist studied this disease immensely.  She ttried everything and I spent lots of money. She had even tried experiments on me hoping we would find something that would help.  She had learned a couple of years ago that doctors had discovered HS was an autoimmune disease.

I had the worst outbreak ever this past summer and cried myself to sleep that night. The next day, I thought about why it was so bad and I realized I had cooked some different recipes that weekend. I Googled "can foods cause HS" and ran across a lady on this site, I believe, talking about being in remission after cutting nightshades.  I had Googled aabout HS for YEARS.. so has my family...  and my dermatologist.  Nobody had ever heard of it!

The lady said any food sensitivity can do It but nightshades are known to make autoimmune conditions worse.  It all made sense, I tried it and it worked!

I work with a girl whose brother in law has lupus. IIt's an autoimmune condition.  He was hospitalized 3 times this summer but is doing better now.  I asked her if he ate lots of nightshades and she said he LOVED peppers from the garden and had been eating them all summer when they were in season! She was going to tell him about nightshades!

I am ignorant to what nightshades foods are. I have never heard this term and I've been seeing doctors for years. Can you give me a clue please what these are

Nightshades are plants in which their alkaline has a different make up?? There's a scientific explanation if you want to look it up exactly but it has  todo with the alkaline.  Nightshades include potatoes, tomatoes, peppers any type of spice made from a pepper, eggplant, tobacco and a couple of other things that had odd names but I didn't eat them anyway.  Lots of foods have nightshades in them that you don't even think about.  Shredded cheese for example is coated with potato starch to keep it from sticking together. Mayo, mustard, etc.  Has paprika or spices from peppers.

Google "nightshades and autoimmune".  You'll see lots of info on it.  I don't think doctors have caught on yet.  It also takes lots of dedication from the patient to not eat them.  I MISS POTATOES!  But I eat sweet potatoes now because they're not a nightshade like regular potatoes.

Crystal Thank you very much for this info... I will do some research...

Thanks

If it's of any help the leaflet here https://patient.info/health/hidradenitis-suppurativa-leaflet says below so it is not a cause but a risk factor.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is more common in obese people and in cigarette smokers. Obesity and smoking are not direct causes. However, they can be thought of as risk factors.

I don't see a link myself, In the survey I did I had over 40 responses and less than half were smokers, doctors like to blame weight, smoking and drinking for everything but sometimes it's not the case!

I cut out gluten and saw a huge improvement, but I still smoke as I did before, so I dont see any connection.

After reading all of the responces to your post I thought i would give you my thoughts. I have had HS for 20 years and been put on all sorts of antibiotics and they even tried Remicade ( a nasty medication with bad side effects ) nothing has worked. I fluffed off my doctor telling me to quit smoking ( i have been a smoker since i was 12 ) thinking they use that excuse for everything in my eyes. After finally getting fed up and doing about 10 hours straight of research last night. A lot comes back to food allergies i noticed the paleo diet worked for some, others simply cut out glutten and others had to cut out nightshades. So i would say proscess of elimination if you dont want to quit smoking. I personally dont want to but after looking at Nightshades i noticed i eat a lot of those goods and my flareups at the moment are horrible sending me to the hospital at least 2 times a month for the past 6 months so i am working on cutting back smoking and plan on quitting for a bit so i can cut out all nightshades to see if that is my problem. I would say just do research and remember google is your friend. read up as much as possible and go from there. I personally got tired of being loaded up on all sorts of drugs and if this fixes it I guess i will have to quit smoking. I hope this helped
