Some discomfort after 3 months

Hi all

I'm now 3 months in after a THR on my Left side, i've been progressing really well, managing to walk without a cane for 5 miles a day and returned to work 2 weeks ago, i've also returned to playing golf. In the last few days i've been experiencing some discomfort around the hip area, the bone around the joint feels a little sore to the touch as if it was bruised and i get a lot of burning feeling inside down my thigh.

I'm not sure if i've caused some damage by overdoing things or can cold weather bring on discomfort, its been extremely cold in the last week which seems to make my scar area sore to the touch. Has anyone else experienced this and is it normal, i'm hoping i don't have to stop golfing and exercising again

Hi brisgolfer

I was told not to play golf or tennis until at least 12 months due to swing action.  I guess it depends on the specialist and how bad the total hip replacement was.  I had a plate due to spurring which compounded the problem. You don't mention the type of work you do - I was back at work in 3 months too but it was not hard physical work.

I am 4 months on my second hop and still rather tender around the scar area. The last few days I have had a lot of throbbing in my thighs and I remember mentioning this before I had my first hip done and was told this may be something else.just hoping it goes away, cold weather does afect me too.

You are doing too much too soon.

The minute the pain restarts is a sure sign you need to stop and rest.

It is easy to feel impatient and ready to get on with life, but the recovery has a life of its own and you just can't rush it. All the best.

Hi

Im also 12 weeks, I do experience some discomfort (mild pain)on walking around the scar area,it feels quite deep inside the thigh area, the scar does not hurt too touch but I also occasionally get like a pulling sensation on walking or carrying heavy items around the scar.

My doctor has said this will improve and it's the nerve endings and everything healing. I think from a golf point of view someone else has said your body will tell you, when you have done too mch,the healing process will take time after such a major operation.

Regards

Nicky

hi brisgolfer ...

Well .... I agree with our friends here that you might do too much right now --- Yor body is letting you know that your muscles need a bit of a rest ---

maybe you don't have to completely stop playing golf or excercise but slow down ... maybe you are a bit fanatic and put extra stress on yourself - so, relax -

Cold and damp weather definitely has an effect on the hardware in my legs/hips -...

,take care and let us know how you are getting on ...

stay warm (cold snaps here in Holland too ... below 0 temps at night )

big warm hug

Bris, I reckon the soreness around the scar area is just something us golfers have to put up with, after 3 replacements I have always had some discomfort and a burning feeling down the thigh I put it down to scar tissue etc.,  Everyone is different but the golf swing is a pretty violent action around a a already vulnerable area.. If I ever get sorted out I am thinking of trying to play left handed..

Thanks for the reply, were the 3 replacements due to playing golf

Put it this way, the hip was replaced then the two breaks occured whilst playing so I can only assume so..

Hi please remember that you have had a major operation. It can take over a year to get back to normal. Have you tried Hydrotherapy? This might be the way forward.regards Amanda h

Ouch, thats not filling me with confidence :-(

Hello brisgolfer, I also had a LTHR 3 months ago. I believe the pain your feeling is from your activities and because you feel good you continue to be active. Although there's nothing wrong with being active our surgery is pretty invasive and is still healing. I began walking a mile and a half and after a while I felt pain in the right leg and could not understand it so I took a couple of days off and the pain went away. So I just walk short distances each day and decided to give my body time to heal before I become more active.
