Some PMR related symptoms/characteristics

I found this article/study that lists some of the questions people have asked on this PMR forum.  It's just kind of nice to see in writing verses us guessing. Thought I'd share it here. Sure explains other pains I've had during this journey, and my weight loss.

PMR-related disease characteristics were abstracted from the medical record, including the following variables: aching neck, aching shoulders/arms, aching hip/thigh, pain distal to arms, pain to the chest/abdomen, pain to upper/lower back, tenderness in upper arms/shoulders, tenderness in hips/thighs, tenderness in elbow/wrist/hand/finger, tenderness in knee/leg/foot/ankle/toe, anorexia, malaise/fatigue, weight loss.

There were so many little/big symptoms related to to PMR and finally they become understandable and recognized as s health condition.

Yes, Layne, we are dog the ones who know about them.

Take care

can you post the link to the article please?

Weight loss is very common in both PMR and GCA. Needless to say - not me! I put weight on because I couldn't exercise properly. Anorexia? Not really - I craved carbs every afternoon and it stopped in a couple of days when I finally started on pred.

Please, read: we are ' among '....

Sorry. Thank you.

Nick, Layne would have to get permission from the moderator, or private message you, to post the link.  I'd like that link too!

Yes, Nick, as you I am quite interested to read this same link referred by Layne.

That carbs craving is interesting, as sometimes people who have an allergic (read "inflammatory"wink reaction to a food actually crave it, a sort of "hair of the dog" syndrome.  I don't think I had the same craving, but I sure found it difficult at first to give up what turned out to be a surprisingly large amount of grain-based carbs in my diet.  I am more likely to want a soupcon of somthing sweet at the end of dinner.... rolleyes

yeah, I tried looking up more on the anorexia part.  It kept saying eating disorder, but I LOVE food!  I just worry about body absorbing nutrition properly.  I do really try to eat well.  But appetite has been reduced, assumed it was the acid reflux from the Prednisone, or it's probably one of the DMARDS Rheumy out me on.

I do NOT feel guilty eating an avacado a day nor the handful of almonds and walnuts and extra virgin olive oil!!!! wink

I did find some Brazilian nuts after many of you mentioned them, but I read they can boost immune system... Should we be concerned about this?

Yes, Anhaga, you probably are right on that!

We will stay on the line waiting for the answer!

I think it is this paper:

Increased risk of peripheral arterial disease in polymyalgia rheumatica: a population-based cohort study

Kenneth J Warrington1*, Elena P Jarpa1, Cynthia S Crowson2, Leslie T Cooper3, Gene G Hunder1, Eric L Matteson1 and Sherine E Gabriel4

I just copied and pasted the quote Layne posted into google. This paper came up first, the second was Layne's post.

Thank you, Eileen, for the information, as always.

I googled peripheral artery disease and polymyalgia

it's a .gov site, article ends in 201

yeah, I thought I might get moderated.

Anorexia just means "lack or loss of appetite for food (as a medical condition)" - by extrapolation it has come to mean the eating disorder but the word has been used medically for a long time.

Really can't summon up a lot of enthusiasm for avocado - which is as well since they aren't common here and not particularly cheap! Don't like Brazils but I do eat a good handful of almonds and hazelnuts per day. The only oil/fat in our house is olive oil and butter (except for the husband's chip fryer redface which I'm totally embarrassed about but it's nothing to do with me) I get through 10 litres of extra vergine olive oil a year for all one of me for salads...

So funny about chip fryer! I'm in tears laughing!

when my hubby gets French fries (as we call them, unsure why), fried potatoes, I steal a few! Or fried okra which is southern food, I steal a couple of those too!!!!

Interesting avacados dos not common there.

Thanks for medical definition of anorexia, didn't see that. Interesting....and that article included that in PMR. Hmmm.

It might have been captured immediately for moderation because that is done by computer - but it is very likely it would have been passed on inspection by the moderator as it is relevant to the forum and simply a reference to find an article not a website.

Help!  I have the opposite of anorexia and crave more food!  I'm craving carbs, but try to avoid them, except for veggies and that type.  My weight climbs very easily  since pred, although some of it is water since I do retain it, pitting edema.  I crave sweets after dinner, sometimes a large cookie (just taken out of the freezer, yum!) will help satisfy me.  I'm loving to EAT!  I do love nuts, espec. walnuts, almonds, and the fat in them.fortunately is not animal fat.  Thie avacados do have quite a bit of fat, also not animal fat, and are good for you in moderation.  Here on Gulf Coast in FLorida, USA they are averaging about $1.00 each.  Cut in half to place in 2 salads is a good portion, adds satiation to the salad.  Loving to eat!!!

Do you eat lots of spinach and kale type greens with olive oil? Might help satisfy stomach and not cause cravings. Any flour or sugar I eat makes me crave more.  Also high glycemic veggies do this too, I.e. carrots, potatoes, fruits, corn, ...

i don't much like kale much, but discovered today infact, I put it in small food processor I have to really shred it! It goes down much easier ha, ha. smile

I did make a kale salad with mixed greens, kale, spinach etc., but have not eaten a lot of it, will try it more, thanks.  My greens are different types of lettuce mixed, tomatoes, cucumbers;  I eat a lot of cucumbers, cut in strips as a snack, it helps satisfy my urge to chew, they  have practically no calories, and supposedly have a diuretic effect.  I put a small amt. of olive oil and vinegar on my salad.
