some white hair

since pmdd started, I noticed a few white hair

The last 2 years that I am experiencing severe peri symtpoms on daily basis, the white hair are increasing.

To be honest, I am anxious about that as it is a sign of aging

I have read that white hair is a symptom of hypothyroidism or other autoimmune disorders. I think in my case hormonal factors paly a huge role to this.

I have checked my thyroid and it was normal

Have you noticed an increase of white hair during peri?

Yes, I have white hairs, I started Peri at 40, I am now 46 and noticed them the last few years. I am very blessed to be a natural light blond and the white hairs are soft, not wire, they are just blending in and look like high lights. I was parinod at first and asked my kids and friends if I should dye my hair....they all said no, it just makes me look like a platinum blonde. One day I went to go get my hair cut and one of the stylist asked who was doing my hair....hmmmm I guess God is

I agree though, when it first started turning white it made me feel old age was setting in.....but I'd take the white hair any day over the other syptoms I've been through, to me the anxiety, depressed days and mood swings are the roughest thing to over come.

Definitely, white hair are nothing, compared to physical, mental and emotional symptoms...

I have thick, dark brown hair and thus white hair are  easily distinguishable...I dye my hair to my physical color which is dark brown sandre.

Are you on any medication Samantha? any HRT?

Definitely if I had darker hair I'd be dying it too.

No medication at all. I did try anti depressants for a bit, but they didn't work for me, so haven't been on anything for year. I still have some anxiety, days of depression here and there and get moody sometimes, I also get shaky, like adrenal rushes and night sweats....but I think after dealing with it for so long I've come to this sort of understanding of it,sort of, I just talk to myself and say it's hormones, not that it works all the time but I find the last couple of months I've been better. I do yoga every morning and evening, it calms me and reminds me to take deep breaths. And if I can avoid something stressful I do. For a few years I was a total basket case so I'm truly hoping it doesn't come back like that again.

Are you on any medication? Other than the white hair, how you coping through it all?

Hi evi, yes I too have a lot of pure white hairs appearing in the rest which is greying. I have also lost a lot of my hair so wear wigs now but you are right, it is hyper activity in the parathyroid gland, not the thyroid itself that does this. I have little to no eyebrows so have microblading done, and have accepted the hair loss by shaving my own off and having a selection of white/grey mix

So I don't look like mutton dressed up as lamb. None of my friends realised I wore a wig they are so good these days. My son and my partner help me pick the style and length of the wigs I buy, they love them as I am more adventurous with my wigs than I would have been with my own hair. You are not alone in your plight. HRT does seem to be helping to slow the aging process down aswell as relieving all the other symptoms. Have you not considered it? Perhaps if you are suitable to take it, you should consider it. Here for you if you need me hun. X

Hello Tina,

It is unfair all this hormonal chaos that affects everything in our body and our appearance.

You sound to me as a very strong woman and you have the support of your family

To be honest, ageing was my biggest fear! I have a good looking but now I am tired all the time because of perimenopause that I avoid to look myself on the mirror. I have also developed agoraphobia

I have completely lost my confidence and my physical well being.

If my doctor agrees, I will try HRT! I cannot bear it anymore! It is a living hell!

Period still coming every month and I have read that peri can last even 10 years...

I am not experiencing any hair loss at the moment and my eyebrows are thick..although some hair are growing black long and wiry!

We are very lucky that there is this forum and we have the opportunity to share our  experiences!

Thank u all very much

I avoid looking in mirrors because I know what I 'm going to see - someone who could have a walk on part in the Walking Dead without any make-up! I have come to a level of acceptance due to the unyielding support of my best friend, who is also my Dr, my wonderful partner, my incredible son, and, his best friend, my adoptive son. They all know what is happening to me and they are all there for me, whenever and wherever I need them. I'm about to go pastel pink for my hair as pastels are so popular these days, I intend to grow old disgracefully, as my entire youth has been blighted by numerous horrible events and illness. The hrt has set me free at the moment so I intend to take advantage for as long as I am able to do so. If you are a suitable candidate, believe me, try hrt, preferably patches which won't upset your gut and by passes your liver so they are lower risk. Because the hrt goes straight into the blood you get the maximum benefits from it, it does take time to kick in, but it is worth the wait. Keep in touch and let me know how you get on. X

I am going to try HRT if my doctor approve that it may be effective in my case.

I was wondering about the white hair ...I read randomly somewhere on the forum that there is an autoimmune disorder called vitiligo...I have a quite white physically skin but I have noticed that the last years I am not producing too much melatonin as in the past. I am tanning  difficult

Before 4 or 5 years, I have also noticed some very little white spots on my right wrist...It was a period of severe emotional stress.

I had visited a dermatologist which she did not diagnosed me with vitiligo...She only gave me vitamin E and folic acid and told me to avoid too much sun..

They were imperceptible like cyclic white spots near my wrist but I think that when I went to the sea and exposed to the sun and after my treatment with the vitamins they vanished...

I read that vitiligo is about loss of melatonin and cause white hair and white spots on the body and there is a correlation with the malfunction of thyroid. Until now my thyroid always was fine...

I am thinking to start again vitamin E and I hope in this....

I am confused and annoyed with all of my symptoms

Hi Evi, I am what they call a typical English rose complexion. I was born very blonde with red undertones and very pale skin. I too have the white patches and white hair but it correlates to the parathyroid gland which is very small and sits above the thyroid. So your thyroid tests can be normal but your parathyroid can on occasion go nuts for want of a better expression. I have lost a lot of hair too. I cannot go out into the sun without factor 50, a hat, dark glasses and long sleeved, full legged loose fit natural material clothes. This all helps. I also have vasovagal attacks if I get too hot ie; I faint due to a sudden change in blood pressure and heart rate in the heat. White hair can also be passed on in the genes so you need to find out if either of your parents, or grand parents went white or grey early. It could be inherited. Hope this puts your mind at ease. Here if you need me. X

Thank u Tina,

and what should I do for my parathyroid?

do you believe that hormone fluctuations during peri may lead to malfunction and fluctuation of parathyroid hormones?

My parents did not have any white hair prematurely...

I am experiencing premature perimenopause... a weird for my age hormonal imbalance but I am still have regular menses and I have read that peri may last even 10 years till the last period but I cannot bear the symptoms anymore.. I do patience for 2 years but I am tired of this...

During each month I have severe estrogen deficiency symptoms...both physical and emotional...I am desperate for help as I am in constant hormonal hell..

Apart form my peri torture, I am going to have a surgery for an ovarian cyst ( endometriosis???) the next week and I am afraid a lot..After the operation I am going to push the doctor to give me HRT...

Well, I have noticed the start white hair since 2012 when at the same time my PMDD arised but now as my perimenopause is becoming more intense, the white are becoming more noticeable...for that reason I believe that they are due to my hypoestrogenism or because I have IBS, indigestion and my metabolism has become slower maybe my body cannot absorb all the nutrients properly...

Thank u again TIna for your support! Keep strong!

Hi again Evi, I will keep strong as I can and you do the same. I believe there is a surgery that can be done to remove parathyroid but it is not always successful as the surgery can upset the thyroid itself. There is a type of cortisone drug that can be given, I can't have it due to having high blood pressure, so I just put up with feeling like a truck has run over me a couple of times a month. I don't mind wearing my wigs and the micro bladed eyebrows look completely real, so I manage as it is the thyroid that can cause far more unpleasant things than what the parathyroid does, so its easier to deal with it. Vitiligo more commonly affects coloured people, they loose skin pigmentation in large patches not the small white spots we get around our wrists. If something is obstructing one of your ovaries that could be at the bottom of your hormone imbalance so getting it dealt with may ease your symptoms. All the best for your op let me know how you go. I'll be thinking of you. X
