Something to take the edge off

I have panic disorder and have previously been on citalopram and xanax To Help cope with it. I took the xanax sparingly so when I really needed them they'd work.

I was completely off everything last year and had not taken a xanax for about 3 as my panic attacks subsided and the citalopram did the job.

This year the panic attacks have been bad. I've been to the doc and psychiatrist . The doctor said he can't prescribe me xanax GPs in the UK don't do that..... Is that true? and the psychiatrist said to change my meds if I wasn't starting to feel better.

I know what works for me I need something to take the edge of I'm going crazy on a daily bases. I don't know what to do? Go back to the doc and ask what can they give to help with the actual attacks.

Does anyone have advise for me?? Many thanks

Hi jess it's the same we're I live in Australia the doctor will not prescribe xanax so after being on them for a long time out of the blue he informs me no more xanax so I got off them 4mths ago it was horrible I started to walk without much luck my anxiety was just to much but I started meditation that was hard work I am into quick fix that's why xanax was good in the short term in the end meditation did help but in the end what really help was facing my greatest enemy my self

Hi Jess!

So I'm from the US so unfortunately I don't have any insight as to whether or not your GP can prescribe benzodiazepines. However, if the citalopram worked, and then stopped working you may have to switch meds. Sometimes meds stop working after some time and you just need to switch things up a bit! I'm not a doctor but I know lexapro (escitalopram) is very similar to citalopram so you might have some luck with that one since you've been responding to the citalopram!

You should see a psychiatrist in any case because they're just better at knowing the meds, and picking what's best for you. Best of luck!!!

Thank you for the reply. I know getting to the route is a must which I've been working on in counseling for years. I run, meditate and do yoga. Yes they help but don't get rid of actual attacks in the moment I suppose I just need to get over this hump 😕

It must of been hard coming off them. Well done!!

Thank you for the reply. I have been on lexapro but they changed it to citalopram. I think I just have to go back to the doctor and say it's not benefiting me they way it should..... Ahhhh anxiety is s**t man .

Thanks for your support xx

Yea jess getting off xanax was hard for me but so was living with xanax wish you all the best have a great day by the way love England was there not so long ago not sure about your worm beer do

Hi Jess,

I'm also a fan of Xanax, and quick fixes, so I can relate. Have you asked your GP about Gabapentin? It's for nerve pain, but is used for anxiety relief in the UK. It's not a benzo, nor a narcotic, so doctors are less hesitant to perscribe it.

I'm in the US, and the FDA hasn't cleared Gabapentin for anxiety, unfortunately. Many of those that take it for other reasons have reported it worked wonders on their anxiety.

I was just prescribed it yesterday, but only tried one so far. Years ago I hurt my back, and was on Gabapentin for a month. It was a month completely free of anxiety. I'm hoping the same will happen again, but recently one of my anxiety issues has been around taking meds of any sort, with the exception of xanax, allergy meds, and ibuprofen.

IT REALLY IS!! hang in there!!! <3

I take diazepam and/or beta blockers depending on what I am going to do. I live in the UK
