My son is 16 and was diagnosed with Graves 2 days ago, based on T3,T4, and TSH. Not all his antibody blood tests are back yet though. Not sure what rhat means. He was asymptomatic for the most part. We found out by actually running normal blood work. Looking back, his hands are always sweaty and he hated wearing his contacts because he said they felt weird. Other than that we would have never thought it was his thyroid. He started 10mg Methimazole twice daily yesterday. I'm not sure what to expect. His blood pressure has been ok and pulse normal. He says he feels fine. I'm trying to modify his diet to help his body. Any information/advice would be helpful.
Hi jessica60319, regarding diet you might find this post useful https://patient.info/forums/discuss/diet-for-over-active-thyroid-562524
Some male patients with hyperthyroidism may develop gynaecomastia which usually resolves after the throid levels normalise. It can be painful and feels like a hard cherry sized lump of tissue just below the nipples. It might not happen in you son's case but it is good fo be aware.
Of course you're worried about your son Jessica
You say He's on 10mg of anti Thyroid per day ..right ?
I was on 20mg per day and after couple of months my numbers were going down and I was reduced to 10mg per day .. after another few months ... down to 5mg At that stage my Endocrinologist decided I should come off !
I wasn't too happy with that decision as I still felt quite 'High '
And still had many GRAVES or HYPER symptoms but I know Now that it takes quite a while for the thyroid hormone to calm down in the body .....so don't be alarmed if that happens to your boy !
After I become Euthyroid ... or normal ... I started to take a number of supplements to help me Or to help calm my immune system which was the cause of the attack on my Thyroid Gland
80 per cent of your immune system is in your GUT .. so that is where you start trying to make it leave the poor Thyroid in peace again .
That involved taking things that Graves had robbed my body of going at 100 miles an hour
I needed ...
B12
magnesium
D3 Plus vit. K2
Selenium
High Dose ACIDOPHILUS
I took and still do 40 billion/ day
There are more that I take and now feel very well but it was a long road to find all I needed but should you be interested for your sons long term health ....please just ask and I'll be happy to tell you ...
please Google the above supplements separately and ask about their association to Graves' disease and how they help ....to see if he is able to take them .. if alls well and he does .. he will certainly like me and others on here find the amazing benefits to his immune system
And therefore ... his Thyroid Gland
Best of luckmx🌹
