Sorry I'm back just little upset about mum

Hi all joined this great support forum a week or so ago now... My mum is 57 and fell and broke her hip she had her operation and its exactly 2 weeks pre op she managed to walk with her walking frame and is in lots of pain so she is unable to do her exercises as much as she should she is also very tired. She does have other health problems I am just worried sick hoping praying she can get through this and gain her walking independence back. Sorry for moaning don't know where else to gain some confidence for her.

I'm 53 and had a hip replacement one year ago tomorrow.  It IS a slow process.  Make a note in your diary to ask your mum how she is feeling in 6 months time and a years time.  Trust me everything will seem a lot different than it does now.  Much love to you all xx

Thank u for replying Jayne I understand its a slow process I just hope she's not stuck with a walking fram for months i know two weeks is early days just hard seeing her like this and hoping as time goes by the pain gets less x

Hi Sumra

Is your mum taking pain relief? I was advised to take as much pain relief as I needed so I could complete exercises.

I really feel for you, it's so hard to see your mum struggling.

I can only say it will get better. Your mum is young and with the support she is getting from you she will start to improve but it is a slow process.

Do you have any other family to help you out? Don't be afraid of calling on your GP or specialist for help. They can put your mind at rest. Could you arrange private Physio To come to your home? Just a thought as realise it depends on your circumstances.

I'm sure others will come up with useful ideas, but hopefully you will feel better knowing the support is here

With hugs

Hello Sumra.  do not compare her progress with those of us who have had a replacement without a break.  Recovery takes a little longer to recover from the trauma of a break and i believe healing takes longer also.  she may also be feeling vulnerable and afraid of another fall.  I know I worry about a fall due to osteoporosis and fear of a break.  Big hugs, lots of chocolate and a glass of something, and a weepy movie.  she will get there xx

Hi I am 60 and 13 weeks post op , hospital didn't want me to go home with a frame , said crutches were better . Try and get her onto crutches they are easier to let go of .

she will be very tired and should go to bed every afternoon , exercises are difficult at first , I started off by walking down the street  passing more houses each time . It's not easy but will help .

obviously I don't know her other health probs but 57 is not old please try not to treat her like an old lady ( don't mean to be bossy )

if she doesn't read this forum read out positive bits to her and give her lots of support and encouragement which I am sure you are already doing , you seem a very caring daughter.

you can send me pm if you want .

Good luck to you both

It will ... be patient and be strong - smiles is what she needs! (and chocolate - everyone needs chocolate :-))

I fell down the stairs! Stairs are very scary - especially now, so totally get this. But one year one  all is wonderful.  You are so right with the glass, chocolatate and cry into a box of tissues (with movie or without) - it really does help!

Yeah u are right trying to stay positive around her and tell her it will be ok x

Hi there! First of all its a major op having a hip replacement! I am sure she will pull through! As long as she has help and rests! If she is worried call the hospital or gp! Regards Amanda

Thank you forrepl ying Barbara yes mum is taking pain relief although not lots of it as she has low kidney function so needs to be careful.

It is heart breaking to see her like this I get very down. Think we were going to look into private physiotherapy to but think I need her to get some of her energy back.

Thank you Ann I would get her chocolate and all the good things but her appetite isn't here much yet.

Thank you so much Mary I did read her out the replies and some positive things so that she could understand it wil get better she is not computer savy so think this reassured her a little.

She is very tired I hope that the rest she get. Will help her rrecover properly. X

Thank u Amanda hope ur right x

Hi

I was 64 when I had my first hip replacement and 66 when I had my second one. So your mum is young.   I was sent home with crutches, they didnt want me to use a frame at home.  The crutches are quite stablising {more so than a stick I found}

As for pain meds......I was told to take a certain amount of each tablet and was then told "dont play chase up with the pain, you must keep on top of the pain....in other words take what tablets you are prescribed and as many as are prescribed,

Lots of tablets dont agree with people ...we are all different. I f these ones aren't controlling her pain and making her very tired go back to your GP and ask them to change the tablets.. They'll quite happily do that. I've been put on one {dihydrcodeine} that some people can take with no side effects but me!!!!!!!! I was spaced out to put it mildly and they changed them and I was fine.

Could she go back to the physiotherapist and get a pair of crutches as well.....try using the crutches in the house......after they adjust them and show her how to use them.?

GP and check out her pain medication.

Sleep in the afternoon.....its a big op and takes a lot out off you and I'm sure if she's like most of us she isnt sleeping well at night to start with....so a cat nap should help a bit.

If she's less tired, and  pain is under control she has a better chance of walking more.

You sound supportive and she is lucky to have you.  Push her gently a little bit...dont just accept that she can't do things.  My daughter {mid 30's} will push me gently if she thinks I can do more than I'm doing

Dont worry about coming on here...this is what we are here for, to share experiences

Love

Eileen   UK

I think you're right to give your mum time to recover from such a major operation and regain some strength. Even if she just does the bed excercises for now where she puts a rolled up towel under her knee and carefully lifts and lowers her lower leg.

My surgeon told me the day after my op to concentrate on getting the basics right first, appetite etc to regain stamina. He said not to rush to do too much too soon. It was good advice. Let it take as long as it takes. A private Physio when ready will help enormously.

Wish you both well

Xx

Hi Sumra, I am 5 weeks post-op  and still wobbly - please don't be too worried around her - I have friends who are doing the same and even though they mean well, it is not encouraging = I feel much better when someone tells me how good i am doing - so much better than before the surgery -  I have learned so much these last days since I have found this forum - Much more patient and much nicer to my self -

Thank you for this its reassuring for me I hope tomorrow she can attempt the exercises even if just in bed. L

How are u now are u fully healed? x

Aww thanks u ann that's reassuring x

Hi Eileen thank you so much u are all wonderful on here helping put my mind at ease.

Yes she is currently not sleeping well at night she is sleeping on her back or good side if she can manage. She has naps at about 5pm and had a few hours kip which I was thankful for as she needs to sleep to recover.

Oh and I hope you are much better now. X
