Has anyone had trouble with soy milk or other soy foods causing digestive distress? I added soy milk to my diet a few weeks ago and then started having Crohn's problems. I scaled back what I was eating to Crohn's friendly foods, but kept the soy milk, and now I think it's making me sick.
I did read somewhere that soy milk can upset you. It was written by a doctor.
Not soy milk as such, but I have tried a couple of meno supplements that had soy as a main ingredient and had to stop taking them as they made me feel a bit weird. But I don't know if it was the soy.
As the majority of soy products are GM you are probably best to avoid them anyway.
Thanks. I've been keeping track of what I'm eating to try to identify the culprit. The only thing on my list that is newer to me is the soy milk. It will have to go.
Hi Elizabeth
That's strange I have been thinking the same about soya milk I have been taking milk in ceral for the past 3 month or so and stomach been a bit weird and I don't have any problem like yours. I have been reading up about soya and I think there is mixed messages about soya is it full of oestrogen ??
I read this morning that soy can act like estrogen. The jury seems to be out on whether or not people with Crohn's should consume soy - I'm finding opinions on both sides - but I'm going to stop the soy milk and see if I feel any better.
Makes me ill
Interesting. I just did not know that it could cause so much trouble.
Soya contains a phytoestrogen - a chemical that acts in a similar way to our oestrogen. Fine for some, not so good for others.
But my big concern with it is the GM thing. Much of the world's soya is what is known as 'Roundup ready'. It is resistant to a systemic herbicide. This herbicide has been found in breast milk!
The brand that I've been buying is supposedly GMO-free, but I wonder if such a thing can exist.
You would hope so if it was on the label! It's all the ones that are NOT labelled that I worry about.
Exactly.
Whereabouts are you? Are you aware of the labelling 'hooha' in the US, and the DARK act? All a part of the story.
Oh yes... I'm in the U.S.
Yes. I don't have problems with soy, but my Mom can't tolerate it at all.
Try almond or coconut milk?
Yes, I do well with almond, and sometimes I also have almond coconut that is really good. I'd hoped there might be some health benefits with soy, but it doesn't seem so. Good to have other options, though.
Hi again.
As my last story is saying I have been taking vanilla soya milk for the last three month and just recently few weeks I have had cramps like periods staring but not had for three years. I stopped taking it for a few day started back yesterday and cramps came back. Would love to know if this is right or my imagination or just a complete coincidence.
What u guys think X
While I LOVE almonds, I would not drink almond milk for two reasons. One, I'm not altogether sure about the processing and two, a handful of whole almonds is full of 'goodies' but to make the milk it takes far more almonds and they come from a thirsty tree. A heck of a lot of water goes into making a small amount of almond milk.
But with all this talk of dairy milk alternatives - what's wrong with milk itself? I drink organic milk and it is yummy!
With Crohn's, I cannot eat nuts. I've been drinking non-GMO almond milk for about 2-3 years and really like it. I also do okay with some occasional peanut butter.
If you are just looking for a refreshing drink, have you tried coconut water? I think it is yummy. Just make sure it is 100% coconut. Not mentioning any names, but the one I get is, let's say, 'not guilty'.
