Hi again all. After having my op cancelled in August I was worried to post anything about my new date in case I jinxed it. Anyway I had the procedure LTHR on 5th Oct and was discharged home yesterday (8 th Oct) in hospital I was getting a sudden sharp spasm like an electric shock through my thigh on the operated side at approx 01.00 hours. I would be given a little oromorph to help this. I was discharged home with Tramadol, paracetamol and gabapentine all of which so took as directed. I've had a couple of spasms during the day when I am drifting in or out of sleep. At 1 am I had the biggest spasm ever it felt like I had kicked the bed although I don't think I did. I phoned the ward and was advised to take 2 paracetamol now and 2 tramadol in 2 hours if I need them. I imagine this is all part of the healing process. Has anyone else had it and what were you prescribed for it?Many thanks. One amazing thing I've discovered is that my yoga classes have helped me to sleep well on my back. I was dreading that bit so that's such a nice surprise!

Hi, just to say that I had those spasms after fracturing and again early post op. They only lasted a second or two though.
Well done for sleeping on your back, I am still awake at 4am and am on day 12.
I can remember spasms and cramp in the leg - so annoying but not asbad as yours.
Great tip on the Yoga, sounds really good, I must try it.
Hi annie
what method did you have? Traditional or a minimally invasive one? Xx
Hi Anne
Yrs I had spasms but they weren't very painful just annoying. I had posterior ceramic.

Yes the yoga position Savasana (corpse pose!) is the specific one to try. There are certain yoga breathing patterns that help too. Lots of info on line and it's something that you can do yourself without having to go to a class. I practised yoga years ago and it's been brilliant going back to it in the past 4 months. In fact I'm really benefitting from all the exercise I have done. It's all been modified to allow me participate but I feel much stronger and fitter so it was all worthwhile.

I had traditional posterior method with ceramic on plastic. Feels pretty good apart from the weird spasm. It doesn't hurt so much as worry me that it could damage the healing tissue. My wound had bled quite a bit since the spasm last night so I'm having the dressing changed in the morning. I spoke to the doctor today and she said to increase the gabapentine for a few days to see if that helps.

I think because of the twisting of your leg during the operation you are getting spasms as a result, which is normal. I had a super path approach which did not involve all the abnormal twisting of the leg so was relative pain free at your stage.
The trade off though is im not having groin pain which a lot of other minimally invasive patients seem to have bit the traditional method you had seems to not lead to any groin pain.
Ultimately we all will be at a similar stage after three months I think, but it seems all these different techniques have pros and cons in the short term.
dont think younhave anything to worry about. Good luck xx
Hi Ann,
Congratulations on your surgery and welcome to this side -
How are you doing?
Spasms and cramps are pretty normal parts of the healing process - They can be painful, can;t they ...
I am not sure if this will help you, but I (tipped by a forum member) drank tonic water and it helped me - Maybe I drank it for 2 days -
You are very early in recovery from this major invasive surgery, darling -
When is your next appointment with your surgeon?
How are you doing otherwise ? You know you can always come here right?
big warm hug

Hi Renee, thank you. The spasms are ok at the moment. The big ones that happened at 01.00 hrs seems to have gone. I have been very careful at spacing my medicines so I think that helped. I have had a few little muscular twitches deep in my groin when raising the operated leg to rest but they subside with yoga breathing. I'm only taking Tramadol at night now and aim to get off it all together soon. Makes me too sleepy and a bit confused. I've had a good rest with using it though. I feel more clear headed today after switching to cocodamol. So all going ok a week since the op. Clips come out next Tuesday and physio starts Weds. Will see surgeon 6 weeks after op date unless any issues (So 5 weeks time). I thought I was going to be able to get rid of my blood pressure tabs as that's been low since the op but it's up again this evening unfortunately. Perhaps all the Tramadol kept it down. I was certainly very relaxed. Anyway something else to work towards.
Hugs
