Grateful for your advice please. I am following my given exercise guide and now 5 weeks post op, but I am still feeling muscle tightness at the top front part of my thigh which I have tried to sooth but with no luck. I is causing me still to limp when trying to walk unaided. Can someone please advise me on a particular exercise to work on that muscle group ?. I have tried my hospital physio team but all day I can't get through to them, most likely they got my number and saying oh no not him again !!!. Cheers and best wishes to you all.
Hi Kevin , I have just got home from my second physio appt . My symptoms sound very much like yours.
12 weeks on tomorrow , physio said thigh muscle pain is due to muscle weakness and normal .
I still have a very slight limp .
he wouldn't give me any new exercises because I still have trouble with lifting leg up when laying on my side .
Couldnt do it at all at first but do 8 at a time now but it's very painful!
told me to keep on with the exercises and he will see me in 3 weeks .
i asked if I should see apsomeone private for massage and was told it would only give relief for 24 hours so no point really .
i had very weak muscles to start with , they thought I had "Footballers Groin" to start with ( I should be so lucky !) physio thinks I am doing well , just a little behind where I should be . Can do most things now .
longed to sleep on side again but ache in morning. , apparently this is normal to as we have had major surgery .
I've been. Looking online and also on YouTube for specific exercises targeting the front top of the thigh no luck yet. I have the same thing Kevin. I've been d the recommended exercises my physio gave me and here 5 weeks later it's still as stiff and tight as ever if I do d anything I'll let you know.
Im 9wks post op and still limping..I do walk a few miles each day but still using 1 crutch.
At 5wks it's still early days for you,my previous THR took 6 months to heal properly, as we always say here,it's major surgery, the cut muscles and new false hip joint take a long time for the body to get used to.
I am also 5 weeks and have similar stiffness in the thigh. My Physio said I had to stay with one stick rather than go without, even in the house as I was limping which was a sign I wasn't strong enough.
Could you do static cycling? Squats and heel raises are all good. Walking as much as you can- to the pub and back maybe?!!
But perhaps stick with a stick while you are limping.
Persevere with phoning, they are bound to answer at some point!
Hmmmm....more pub walks....great idea.... With good rest in pub garden. Now doing more static cycling downhill doing Tour De Holland....so will persevere. Keep well and thank you.
Im about 41/2 weeks after surgery & have the same thing , feel like my thigh is in a vice after walking for 5 mins. How do you even get a physio App? I was sent home from hospital & havent seen or been offered any Physio other than the day after my op when they said I was well enough to go home. I went to a private hospital for my op & it was paid for by the NHS , I guess I will have to go to my GP & asked to be refferd for physio which will take time & mean while I have 2.7 cm longer leg & walking like a weeble :-)
I'm quite surprised how Physio varies between counties. I live in Gloucestershire and went to a private hospital funded by NHS. I have 6 weekly Physio sessions at the same hospital as part of the package and it's been really useful. They check wound, discuss pain and any concerns I have then spend 30 mins on exercises which I then repeat at home.
Hi, many thanks for finding and then sending the YouTube. Tried it, fell through the door, now bigger nose ....!!! No, it appeared to have worked as felt certain muscles start to twang, twirl, pop, so will continue. Let me know how you get on with it. Best wishes.
Hi Kevin and others. I was done 9 days ago. It's interesting to see the blogs full of frustrated people like me, wishing progress was quicker. I'm lucky, most of my muscles are already doing as they are told. But like you, it is raising my leg, either off the bed or in front of me that is so weak. There's several exercises on youtube I've found. From them, I'm doing two.
1. Supported by my sticks, I do a gentle marching action, just knees bend up to 45 degrees
2. With hands on a sideboard or similar, I do knees bends, again just down to 45 degrees.
These exercises seem to be putting pressure on that top thigh muscle, so I'm hoping they'll improve my situation. Good luck!
Hi Tom, good luck with the exercises. I've been doing those but still the stiffness. Had a chat with physio this morn and they mentioned was doing well but one of thse patients who recover slowly . Oh well, no hurries, means more time watch the test matches....wife willing
On that same Utube page there is a 4part excercise plan by cyclingphysio to strengthen the gluteus medius..I've just tried it on my left side I had operated on 12 months ago and guess what I can hardly raise the knee at all, which tbh has shocked me a bit, obviously my glute muscles are in bad shape..Strangely though I can do it on the right side which I've recently had THR on..hmmm.
I'm going to start trying the exercise every day from today..it's never too late.
Progress after my 1st op last year was painfully slow, took a good 6 months in all..but I had arthritis in that hip for about 20yrs so the muscles had all but disappeared..my recent op on the other hip however has gone really well and now 10 wks post op apart from slight muscle pain I'm in pretty good shape.
After a nasty first 6wks you should feel the benefits, making it all worthwhile 😃
