Spinal Block & Scoliosis?

Hi, I havn’t got a date for surgery yet, having first pre op July 10th then another on 25th July, I want to opt for spinal block as really don’t want GA if possible, not particularly good with them, so I asked yesterday at Joint School9New scheme accross the country) but they couldn’t answer, and didn’t give me impression it would be favourable, but I will ask on 10th just thought your knowledge on here is vast  cheers..

Edited- can’t find delete post or edit

Sonya,

After your post yesterday, I thought you were having your op on the 25th! Why are you having two pre ops? I had one and thought everyone had one if their op was within three months.

I believe they use spinal as normal these days unless they have a problem injecting into the spine and need to give a GA or people have health issues where they cannot have a spinal. Don’t worry it will be fine.

hi sonya

i had 2 THRs just over 2 years ago both done with a spinal block and a GA just to knock me out the recovery is much better fir you ask the doctor for a wee jag to numb your back before the spinal that way you wont feel the needle i got it for 2 operation and it was great
hope this helps and good luck

donny

Hi I asked that at this joint school thing, nurse just said oh they do different things, so god knows, wish I was having op on 25th lol she said pre ops last the 3months but don’t know when I will get op date, I was told they can’t make you wait longer than 18 weeks, struggling is an understatement, I hope I can have spinal, thank you

Thank you, love all the advice on here  cheers.

Hi Sonya,
get the spinal.
keep us posted.

I was told everyone was offered a spinal initially in my area, but if things happened during the op they may then change over to a GA or if there was a particular reason you could not have a spinal.

Hi, that’s the plan, will do

Hi Sonya, I had a spinal block and sedation for my hip replacement last december - and believe me, you haven’t got anything to worry about . A small injection of anaesthetic in your back, you will hardly feel that, then a warm feeling from the waist down -the nurse described it as the central heating coming on - and you quickly go numb. Then you are connected to the usual bleeping equipment and an oxygen mask - and that is probably the last thing you remember. In a twinkling you are awake again and it is all over - strange noises which are the pneumatic leg squeezers - a few pipes and wires which weren’t there before. Back to the ward for a cup of coffee and a sandwich.

Yes I understand if they need to change to GA during, but hoping I can be allowed the spinal with having scoliosis, not sure how it all works, I will ask on Wednesday, apparently 95% in my area for hip and knee have spinal, very encouraging.

HI, did you remember anything from op or did you only have a little sedation?

The anaesthetist checked my back to see if I could have a spinal at the pre op. I said I had a slipped disc, she said the whole world had a slipped disc! I had a spinal with no sedation as I wanted to know what was going on. The surgeon was able to talk to me during the op.

That’s brilliant, I want to do the same but don’t know if i’m brave enough lol, i’d like to see what they remove, I know it’s a crumbled mess but i’d like to see  I presume if I don’t like what I hear I can ask for sedation during.

They showed me the chopped off top lying in a petrie dish, looking like a baby, bloody hedgehog. I am sorry I did not have a camera.

I am sure you can ask for sedation when you want it, the anaesthetist was very keen I should have it, I think he thought I might be trouble!

Ha ha!! glad all went well for you, now if I could just get a date for surgery, I suppose I better have my pre ops first lol, cheers

Sounds delightful, but i’d want to see too , where’s that camera when you need it lol

If you nave the pre ops you should have the surgery quite soon after. I did not get a date for the op until after my pre op.

did you have to wait long for your op? my pre ops are 10th and 25th July.
