Spotting after 178 days with no period--is this normal?

I was almost 6 months period-free and 3 days ago I started spotting. I am cramping too. (I had regular periods until January when I missed my first period ever.) I am not sure this will turn into a period or just stay spotting. I am terrified. I had a benign polyp removed in December, 2019. They did two uterine biopsies--one in October and one in December, 2019. All was normal. But I am terrified they missed something and I am dying. I called the on call doctor this weekend and she was pretty rude. "Call the office." So that didn't help. What have you ladies experienced? Is this relatively normal towards the end? I am 53 and was feeling fantastic until Friday.

Yes, spotting is normal during peri. I often spot between periods. I also can get spotting after having sex, and then it goes away. Sometimes I will spot on and off for days before a period finally arrives. If you are spotting, you will likely get a period, but it is hard to say for sure.

Try not to worry, particularly as you have had two recent scans. Spotting is extremely common in peri, and it is a sign that things are winding down and menopause is headed your way:)

Thanks so much, Bev! Hearing about your experience is very helpful. Dr. Google has diagnosed me with moments to live.

I think you are right. It seems like the spotting on and off before a period is what is happening now. I just got some regular, red flow.

Just to be on the safe side, I made an appointment for tomorrow with a new GYN.

It is amazing how directly linked my health anxiety is to perimenopause! I am so afraid I become non-functional when this hits. I was up all night in unrelenting fear.

But I had nearly 6 months of living like the person I was meant to, functional, productive, optimistic. No brain fog–which was my worst symptom.

I do not know what I would do without you ladies! I thank God that 4 years ago I came across this forum. Love to all of you!

Awww… thanks! It is great to hear how well you were doing without a period. That’s where you will be heading soon, and then it should be much smoother sailing for you:)

The high anxiety is definitely linked to perimenopause, and when it’s there, it is pretty much impossible to overcome it. Believe me, I get it!!
