Sprained ankle is swollen even after two months? I am really worried! Should I get a 2nd opinion?

I sprained my ankle really bad 2 months ago! I got an X-ray but the X-ray was okay. The swelling didn't go even after two weeks so my doctor suggested getting no an mri. The Mri repost said I have partial tears of the anterior talofibular and calceneofibular ligaments!

Other findings are-

Marrow edema involving the lateral talar dome, portion of the medial malleolus and small portion of the cuboid presumably representing intraosseous contusions.

I don't understand the above and I'm really freaking out! My podiatrist has given me naproxen and asked me to make alphabets with my foot everyday for a month. But I want to know it is really unusual to have the selling even after two months. I can walk easily I have no pain. But pain is get in mornings when I wake up. Plz let me know if I should get a second option from another podiatrist?

I would suggest going to an orthopedist doctor that specializes is foot and ankle disorders.  I am so sorry you are experiencing this discomfort and swelling.  I hope that they are able to help you.

My experience is that podiatrists are wonderful, but limited when it comes to this kiind of injury.  Just my 2 cents for what it is worth!

I agree with Jan below. While my injury was clearly different (pilon fracture, plate and 6 screws), the Ortho cou see variations in the bone (density along with minuscule cracks) tat targeted diagnosis and treatment. Aap had great suggestions on potential nerve damage/pain management tat helped in my recovery. I hope this helps

I agree with Jan there are skilled ortho docs that can give you a clearer understanding of what's going on and what your options are especially after this length of time. I would strongly recommend a second opinion to an ortho doc who specializes in ankle problems. Hope all is better soon.
