Stammering since age 7

Hi, I am 14, and I had severe tified fever when I was 7. it went on for several days, and it left weak. I was so weak that my neck had bent in a direction and my parents got me a drip. After tified, I started stammering. We consulted with few physicians and they said that it would get better with age. Now, I just had my 14th birthday a few weeks ago, and my stuttering is getting worse and worse. I am very social in school, I laugh, joke, swear without any hesitation. Sometimes I feel that if I am healthy, my condition will improve, and I am tired or weak, my stuttering would increase. Please help me as I am entering 8th Grade right now and i would like to spend this year without stuttering. I suppose a bit of it is fine,as everyone in schools accepts the fact, but now, it's getting so bad that if a can't pronounce a word, I need think of a synonym instead. Any Help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Well I must say straight away that I am impressed with the way you have handled things up to now.

It's not easy when struck down at an early age to get over any infliction, most of us will have something to struggle with , either physically, like your stammer, or mentally which believe me or not is usually much worse to overcome. You know the cause, or trigger to your stammer and with extra effort you may find ways to see a situation before it manifests itself and you control that to your advantage either by turning away from the trigger or preempting it . Difficult to start but with a little practice I feel you will conquer or at the very least moderate your stammer.

Thank you for the encouragement and I do hope to overcome stuttering. As there is no 'cure' for this, I will hope for the best and try to overcome this or atleast live with it.

Hallo, I would just like to add that it is very good therapy to read out loud. Any novel, newspaper or magazine.      You can do this on your own...just pick a short piece at first and take it very slowly, making sure you pronounce each word properly. Do this for 5minutes a day at first and then read longer pieces and take more time. Set aside some time each day to do this and dont rush it.

This will educate your brain to slow down and form each word properly. Good luck.
