hi what is normal time to come off painkillers and anti inf.
husband now starting wk 4 and has been doing really well and came off all except odd paracetamol i last week but today tbe scar area is sore and hes just taken a pain killer .
is this where its knitting together.and should he still be taking some meds.
Hi joan,
Does he really need a painkiller if it is just sore? Is he massaging with oil? I did not have any pain after the op and took paracetamol for a week just in case which was silly really when I think about it. I am still feeling my scar some days at 22.5 weeks but it is not painful.
Quite honestly it varies, I was off all painkillers in a couple of days, most are not so lucky. If it's sore, and he needs the odd paracetamol, that's fine, I could have done with some last night as my rear-end was a bit sore from walking, but I just couldn't be bothered. It was all fine again this morning, so went out for another walk.
It usually takes months for all the muscles to regain their rightful place and settle down, so that's what he is feeling.
Best wishes
Graham
I was given Tramadol pain killers in hospital and hid them in my wash bag as I did not seem to need them, I think I have a high pain threshold. I think some people need them much more than others. If you have pain you should take painkillers to suppress it. I was never offered anti inflammatories just Tramadol.
Sometimes Tylenol can work, too, for the discomfort. I took pain meds for little more than a week which was long enough for me.
I've just had my 6 week check today and all is well. I didn't take any painkillers from day 3 onwards apart from one day when, like your husband, my scar was a bit sore. Just let him listen to his body. Most important thing is to do the exercises and walk as much as possible. I wish him well. It's a wonderful operation!
Took very strong painkillers for about 10 days post surgery, then able to drop out the breakfast dose, but still took night time to help me sleep, by about 14 days able to drop strong opiod painkillers, but kept taking Panadol especially at night for about a month, still take them occasionally when I need them, more than 2 years on.
I think once you have arthritis in hips you also have arthritis in other joints to some extent, spine, shoulders, knees, that me.
Try to help myself as much as I can with gentle exercise, swimming or maybe I should say treading water at the local heated pool without touching bottom, supported by pool noodle, doing some extra physio exercises in shallow end, pushing against the weight of the water, leg swings, stretches, stepping sideways, all good exercises post hip replacement.
