Hello, I am in dire need of some encouragement (again). Have been staring at the box of prescribed Citalopram for 6 days. Too anxious to even get started. Please push me, and remind me that I will survive this. So good to read success stories, knowing that with time I will be feeling so much better.
It was simple for me. It saved my life. I was contemplating bad things. I have had some side effects like confusion yawning etc but it was miraculous for my emotions. The trade off was an easy decision
Thank you so much jcwray. I need more of your kind of attitude. Has it helped you a lot? You sound so positive about it. Great stuff, and thank you for your response. 👍
It simply saved my life but there is no "free lunch" so monitor the side effects and be aware. Best of luck
I was ill with anxiety and depression on and off for about 15 years - I missed out on a lot of my life. I'd tried many types of medications which did nothing really, but as soon as I started on SSRI's I recovered (am now taking Citalopram). Same as jcwray says - it also saved my lift :-)
Its not a quick fix medication, it takes a long time (average 3-4 months) does produce side effects initially (they wear off), but in all honesty it's so worth it.
I've now been well for about 16 years and I'm so in love with life!!
I agree, monitor your side effects in a diary. They're only short lived and many people have followed the same path.
K x
Life ....... not lift lol :-)
Btw alcohol is REALLY bad with this medicine. One of the "frequent" side egfects is "amnesia" which translates into blackouts if you drink. I didnt connect amnesia to blackouts and that was a mistake. You will lose control
Hi mate just let the cit do its thing mebbe takes a few weeks but u will be right mate all the best
I've been ok drinking the odd glass. Mind you I've been on med for many years, and I didn't want to miss out on my favourite tipple :-) Think it all depends on the person, and if having a drink then monitor it in small amounts. Not a good idea to drink in the early stages of taking meds though.
Just be careful. Maybe drink a few with someone to monitor you. It caused me a complete blackout
Thanks will do. I've been taking meds for around 15 years and never had a problem. That just have been scary for you :-(
Hi Lee2310 I have been on Citalopram for 2 weeks and had a few minor side effects mainly in the first few days anxiety only for 2x days dull head ache, lump in the throat feeling and slight nausea, however after 2 weeks only get slight tremours in hands shaking. I feel 100 x better than I did I would swear by them I even sleep better. You will be fine they work for most people, if not as effective for you then try different product until you feel better! You will never look back.
Thanks Steve. Started 10 mg today. Too early for side effects although I am more anxious today, but that is my anxiety and not the med. I am so glad to hear you are feeling so much better, and here is hoping they work their magic for me too. Great to hear yo sleep better as insomnia has been an issue for me for a couple of months now. Did you start on 20 mg or go easy and start on 10 mg? Thanks for the reply.
Hi Lee, I started on half a 20 mg for 6 days and that gave me minor anxiety 2 occasions although very mild in comparasion! The side effects out weigh the illness by far I feel good and you have to think of it as repairing a wound slowly nothing at first but recovery soon. You will be fine on them Lee be positive tell yourself these are my ticket to happiness have you ever considered Cognitive behaviour therapy for anxiety in the interim google it there are some great tips around managing anxiety and depression take care!
Hi,
Ive been taking citalopram for 6 years now after suffering horrific anxiety after my second baby....yes there were a few side affects intially but they do go (or at least mine did) and I got my life back.
About 3 months ago I decided I wanted to come off of it, so I reduced my 20 to 10 for 6 weeks then 10 to 5........intially it was ok and I felt fine, then out of nowhere massive anxiety hit and if felt worse than it had ever been, I went back up to 10mg.
I really decide then that if am on 10mg for the rest of my life then so be it, the choice between being in a constant state of anxiety or being on 10mg forever is an easy one, citalopram does make my life calmer and happier, in all honesty I didn't realise how much they support me until I tried to come off of them.
Im also doing CBT so maybe in a year or so I will be able to manage on 5mg, but as I say I no longer care and I'm just happy to have normality in my life again.
Honestly they can make such a positive difference to your life, I really hope they work for you, good luck!
Thats fantastic news Alice ! if being on medication helps life then I say do it and dont feel one bit bad about it, plenty of great people take medication I may have too permanently depending on how I get on as I've only been on it for 2 weeks? Take care!
Day 3 on 10 mg. Not much of an appetite, nothing remarkable other than my usual anxiety. Thanks for all the encouragement, and yes, like the rest of you who have been there and done it, I will push through. Thanks guys and girls, your stories keep me inspired x
