Starting tooth implants tonight, doubled pred for this.

Hi, Yes tonight I start the implants (2) in lower jaw.  I saw my gp last Wednesday and informed her of this.  I was on 15mg pred and told to double them to 30mg yesterday, today and tomorrow.  I am a wee bit concerned, maybe I just need a wee bit of reassurance.  Also my weight is ballooning up, and I am very conscious of eating healthy.  Although with the implants I may be drinking soup ect.  Any comments welcome and thank you in advance.

I have a couple of implants scheduled for next months.  This is invasive for the body.

I am not looking forward to it.  I'll wait for guidance and advise from others who have gone through this

Hi pat, I've nothing to say, other than good luck. I wouldn't be concerned I believe you are doing the right thing by temporary upping your preds. Just image how great it'll be when it's all done!

as for your weight, try a low carb diet, I'm on one and I am losing weight albeit slowly, but that's ok with me. Regards, christina

Thanks Erika, well I will let you know how I get on.  Tonight is when the gums get cut and then some drilling into the bone ect.,  It is now a matter of need and function rather than how they look.  Thank for getting back to me.

Christina your good luck wishes are good enough for me.  You are right I just want tonight to be over and done with, tonight is the biggy but I am sure I will be ok.  Oh and the weight thing, I left my slimming club it was just getting me down, I was doing everything I could and stopped carbs for 3 weeks and still didn't lose an ounce.  I lost 1 lb in 7 weeks.

Totally messes with my head knowing that I am doing everything right.  Fresh veg, fresh fruit, no diary, 2 wheatabix with soya  milk would be the only carbs.  It's great that you are losing weight even though it's slow hang on in there.  It will pay off.  Just like the pred, slow and steady.  Thanks again.    Pat

Be brave, Pat!  It sounds severe, and in my case it is also a matter of need on the right upper part of my gums.....  Not good.  I wish you all the best and upping the prednisone is probably important because the whole procedure causes a lot of STRESS.  And we know what Stress does to PMR!!!  All the best to you, and please let me know how you are doing.

Thanks! Erika

Good luck tomorrow Pat.  I agree with increasing your dose. I would be sure to let your Dr. know as well because I think on higher doses some people are more prone to infection.  Antibiotics should take care of that.  I had minor arthroscopic surgery and with the antibiotics I was fine.

Just think, by tomorrow night it will be all done and you'll be on the mend🌸

Thank you so much Mrs. Mac, I was at the dentist tonight and its all over.  Mouth frozen solid, teeth had to be taken out (this was not planned but there was an abscess I think) Dentist gave me 2 amoxicillin as soon as I went in and sent me home with two boxes to take over the next couple of days.  I go back next Monday to get the stitches out.  I did see my dr on Wednesday and she suggested I double my steroids from 15mg to 30mg yesterday, today and tomorrow and then we will see how it goes.  So the hardest part is over and done with.  I am on the mend now that the hard part is done.

I would recommend him to anyone and if anyone was getting implants I would suggest go ahead.  My two sons call me Braveheart lol.  Mrs. Mac thank you again and you keep yoursef well rested.  I appreciate your lovely message.

Hi Erika, well I am home and in my pjs and the local anesthetic is wearing off .  I had to get a tooth out and  this was not in the plan, but it's ok.  My mouth was frozen solid and the work began, not too bad may I add.  I was getting 2 implants on my bottom jaw and the bone shrinkage has been really bad over this past couple of years, nothing to do with PMR or pred.  As soon as I went in he asked about how I was feeling and I had told him I was fine.  He already new about me upping my pred, doubling it actually, from 15mg to 30mg yesterday, today and tomorrow and then back to 15mg on Wednesday.  He gave me 2 amoxicillin with a glass of water as soon as I sat in the chair and sent me home with 2 boxes and corsydal to be used tomorrow.  So so far so good, have to go back next week to get stitches out. I would reccomend the implants, it really wasn't too bad.  Will keep you updated.  Take care   Regards   Pat

THANK YOU, PAT for sharing your implant experience.  It does not sound too bad, and I will remember to up the Prednisone like you did.

I will be getting 2 implants on the upper right in about a month with a canterlever tooth in the middle.  I have THREE teeth missing, and I talk "funny" sometimes.  It is only noticeable when I laugh, but I cannot chew on the right site.  Terrible!  It all happened a couple of months ago ---- it is really wretched to have dental problems and implants are VERY expensive, but probably worth it for the need of proper chewing and looks! :-)

Goot luck Pat. Hope you heal fast!  Please, keep me posted how you feel tomorrow.

Thanks. Erika

I can never keep track of the time difference😕.  I live just outside of Vanvouver, BC so I think we're far behind you.  Glad it is over and all went well💐

Hugs, Diana

Good morning Erika, well now a wee update.  Had a good nights sleep and just had my coffee and a brioche.  Took my preds, and 2 antiobiotics for my mouth.  My face is a bit swollen but really not that noticeable, no outside bruising, no bleeding and Dentist thought I would bleed more because of 75mg of aspirin and healing taking longer because of preds.  So Erika, so far so good.  Glad it's over and done with, well that part of it anyway.  Go for it Erika you will not regret it.  Thanks again Erika.   Pat

Hi Diana I live in Belfast, Northern Ireland and it is now 10.20am.  Yes all went well and so far so good.  Face a bit swollen but nothing to write home about.  I have taken my preds, my antiobiotics and 2 painkillers and I am as right as rain.  Will update progress as I go along.  Thanks for the hugs and the same back to you (((((hugs)))).   Pat

Diana, you live in beautiful Vancouver, B.C.  I will be visiting my daughter and family in Vancouver, B.C. during Easter.  I live in Vancouver, WA close to Portland --- just over the Columbia river.

Hello Pat, thank you for the implant procedure update.  It does not sound too awful and doable. Now I know what to expect.

You are brave, and I hope I will be also when the time comes.

I wish you speedy healing and soon you will be happy that you are more complete! :-)

Please let me know if all goes well.

All the best to you,

Erika

Hi Erica, thanks for your message.  I promise to keep you updated as and when at each stage of implants, this can take between 3 to 6 months but I am sure it will be worth it in the long run.

I also noticed there is bruising coming out on both sides of my chinny chin chin, but to be expected.  So next Monday I will be getting stitches taken out.  That's the latest.  I feel like a news reader lol.   Regards    Pat

Thanks Pat,  you are 6 hours ahead of us here.  I am currently in Merida, a colonial city in the state of Yucatan in Mexico, but at home in BC you'd be 7 hours ahead.

One of our favourite expat hangouts is Hennessey's Irish Pub that is owned and operated by 2 crazy Irishmen from Dublin I think (there's that memory thing again).  They moved here about 8 years ago and have made quite a success of it.

Take care and we'll be watching to see how you're making out.

Hugs, Diana

Hi Erika,  Vancouver, WA is very close to us.  We have been to Portland but never made it across the river.  The only other person I have found on this site that lives in the Pacific North West is Jean who lives way up in northern BC in Hay River and is farther away from me than you are.

Where in Vancouver does your daughter live?  We are in Mexico until May or I think it would have been great to meet a fellow PMRer.  We live in PItt Meadows, a beautiful little city at the beginning of the Fraser Valley but I find the warmer weather here is good for me.  I seem to be more mobile and the sunshine just makes you happy.

Have a great time with your daughter and I hope the weather is good so you can enjoy Vancouver.  It is such a beautiful city.

Hugs,  Diana

Thanks Diana, oh Mexico one of the best holiday of my life.  I just loved it.  I was there at my cousins wedding in 2006.  We were in 1 of 3 sister hotels, I cannot remember the name.  About 1 hour from Cancun.  One of them was an eco hotel but had been damamged by the tsunami, we stayed in the one for adults only (no children).

I really loved Mexico, learning about the Mayans, then the show in the outdoor amphitheatre.  A friend of mine was there last year and she was at the outdoor show and she said it was magnificent.  There is nowhere else on earth I would rather be.  The people were brilliant, the hotel fantastic.  Once in a lifetime experience, jcuzzi in our room.  Fridge full of different beers and 4 optics full of vodka, whisky and 2 other drinks.  My mums sister in law and I shared the room and we don't drink, well water by the bucket full.  Memories.   Oh I know about the memory thing only too well.  Well if they are Irish then they are mad and if from Dublin, madder lol.  I am from the North, Belfast.  Will keep you informed and updated and loads of ((((hugs)))) to you Diana.     Pat

Hi Diana,  I bet you love being in Mexico where it is nice and warm.  It has been mild this winter so far in the Pacific Northwest much to our surprise.  It is out of the ordinary.

My daughter and family live close to Commercial Drive which is a fun area with good restaurants.  Her husband is Scottish and both teach at the Simon Fraser University.  Their 12 year old daughter Sophie is a delight!

Enjoy Mexico and the warm sunshine!

So nice to know another PMRer from not too far.

Hugs, Erika
