Static bike, pre-op. Yay or nay?

It seemed like a good idea to convert my clothes horse back to its intended purpose as a static bike.  Get those muscles I need post op on good shape.  I know how sedentary I have become and thought this would be a great way to change that.

I only did a few minites here and there on setting number 1.   Ended up in bd early, eventually took two Tramadol and knocked myself out to get some rest.  The pain in my groin was awful, really sharp.  Woke at 3:30 and thats me. Too early to take more meds and still in pain.

it did not hurt at the time,  so tell me should I avoid ?

Hi Kristin ..

Oh dear ... sounds familiar to me ..  My physical therapist put me on the stationary bike too prior surgery - sounded really good, you know .. to strengthen the muscles and  such -- It was a little painful at first but then, while cycling, it was good and stayed on bike for 15 minutes -

But then .... pain was so bad and it took at least a full day to recover - He had me come practice even more and longer - and it got worse --

so I stopped going ... my body was in too much pain afterwards ...

It was my decision as PT thought it would be better to continue --

Good luck and please, listen to your body -

warm hug

Hi Kristin,

I was was a big cyclist preop but had to stop about 3 months before because my hip was too stiff and painful, it wrecked me for the rest of the day. There is no doubt being fit helps in recovery and that as the hip deteriorates you get muscle wasting. It can be regained after though.

If you can it's good but it's not helpful if you have pain.

Im now 7 weeks post surgery and looking to get back to my bike very soon.

Hi Kristin, you are having a hip replacement for a reason. When I looked at my x-rays it was fairly obvious that there was no cartilage left and bone was rubbing on bone and causing very bad pain in my groin and outer hip. This pain got worse if it was irritated and I did try irritating it a few times before I learned my lesson.

Keeping fit is important but in hindsight I would spend my time flexing muscles instead of grinding joints. If your date isn't too far away I would just concentrate on anything that doesn't impact on the joint - swimming (I did a lot of floating!) etc.

my next one is in a few months and I am looking after the new and the old in preparation.

Thanks for the reply Renee.  I didnt even do 15 mins in total but yes my body is saying no.  Will rest up for a couple of days then try something gentler.

Hi Kristin. I had some physio input about a year pre op. Gentle exercises to strengthen the muscles. They are on an app that I downloaded post surgery at the suggestion of someone on this forum. It's called pocket physio. I also went to aqua fit and walked as much as possible while I could. Nearer to op this was only about 500 yards with painkillers on board and I had to give up aqua fit.

You are right Kate, my x-rays were the same.  My op is October the 5th so not really that far away.  I tried swimming in May when I was on holiday and found that painful too, I managed a short swim if I just did not use my left leg whatsoever.

will stick to butt squeezes in future

Hi Georgie

Yes I think I will save the bike till after my op.  Pretty sure my muscles are wasted already so it will be hard work. Needs must.

Thanks attractac I will check out that app.

Currently I don't have any painkillers that actually reduce pain. I can only take CoCodamol and Tramadol.  They act more as sleeping tablets than pain killers. I wake up when they wear off. The CoCodamol slightly less than the Tramadol.  Think I will need to ask GP again if there is anything else I havent tried. The list of stuff I am allergic to is quite long. Sadly.

it is getting harder each day to cope with the pain.

I was on naproxen but you are probably allergic to them. My bp skyrocketed at my pre op assessment. I blamed naproxen so for my last month stuck to paracetamol with the occasional co codamol. Can you be given a pain patch of any sort?

Hi Kristin,

greetings fro dull unwarm Exeter!

Interesting question - I've been encouraged to use stationary/ ordinary bike as part of my recovery - but I am at 5 months and don't  you are on th journey to recovery.....

So I guess I'd say given you have a ready machine at yr disposal, give it a couple of weeks, then cautiously try again and see wot happens. Sometimes people give up too easily  after one go and pain, and its simply nature saying 'not yet' , not saying  'not never'

Love and good luck

Naproxen is an NSAID, cant take any of the, not even asprin.   I had morphine patches once but again allergic.  Lol, hard isnt it.  Someone suggested acupuncture. Not sure about how effective that can be.

Will ask GP in the of chance there is something I haven't tried.

Thanks again,

You are just over 6 weeks to surgery, that's all. Hang in there and be kind to yourself. Once you have the new hip that pain will go. It is replaced with surgery pain which is a lot more hopeful. I am 7 weeks post op, I am 52 and I am walking, swimming, driving and starting up my own little business.... All things I couldn't do before. Relax, get loads of rest, its just six weeks xxx

I started using the bike at a few weeks ... like you, set on level 1 -- started at 5 minutes.  I am now a few months out and I try to do 30 minutes at level 2 (sometimes push it to 3)

I have read some people get injections for the pain and it lasts a few weeks. Cant find thd posts now but I am wondering if I should ask about that.  Might help me cope for the next 6 weeks.  Think they were steroid jabs, not sure now.
