After being in remission from Graves disease for 3 years, I changed my calcium supplement. Unfortunately I did not realise at the time that the new supplement contained aspartame. But, within a couple of months of taking this calcium supplement, my Graves flared up again! Now I'm not saying that aspartame was the sole factor in triggering my Graves again, but it certainly is a coincidence. Needless to say, I have changed my calicum supplement and will from now on examine everthing for their ingredients. I just find it shocking that prescribed medicines can contain something like that. Another contains hydrogenated soya bean oil - after all doctors advise one to stay away from hydrogenated foods!
Well Aspartame is legal and allowed to be in a lot of foods like soft drinks, etc as a sugar replacement. There are a lot of foods that are not good for us that are manufactured. Don't know if it would be a problem if you don't have Graves but it is good to know about it aggravates Graves. Generally, the advice is regarding diet to shop on the outside isles of the food stores, that is each fresh fruits and vegetables and stay away from processed and packaged foods.
Thanks for all the info. I don't drink pop. And currency only drinking water. I don't have Graves yet. I don't know if that can change or not down the road. I am just following what people with this disease have done and that works. All my doctor says is your body will heal in time..not much help
I am sorry to hear that your Graves is back. Thank you though for your advise I am not long diagnoised. My vitD is low so Dr perscribed Dand calicium Just checked and it also has soy and aspartame. So I will replace it.
Thank you
