Stay in hoapital

hi,

how long do you usually stay in hospital after a posterior prolapse operation? My gynocologist said 1 night but I've read that it can be 2-5 nights. I'm having the procedure at the Nuffield (gp sent me there so not paying) and I'm just trying to sort things out

thanks in advance

Hello Jools. I was in for 2 nights but my consultant did say I could stay in longer if I wanted. I suppose it depends how you feel but you need to make sure they give you plenty of analgesics to take home, enough anyway until your GP prescribes them for you. You may find you get more rest at home!

Sorry just read you are going to the Nuffield. I had mine as an NHS patient at the BMI private hospital. My advice is stay as long as you can. You'll be in a side ward so it'll be peaceful

thanks Matron, do you think one night is enough? I'm not due in until 12 midday so I'm confused

No I don't really think one night is enough. Like you I went in at lunch time, had the operation about 2pm. The following day I still had my drip and a catheter in until lunchtime. You do need regular pain relief and rest. I don't think they'll kick you out if you're not ready.

Thank you again matron.

Good luck Jools. Take care and remember to rest and no lifting, not even a kettle for the first few weeks and no heavy lifting for about 6 months. Keep in touch.

I was in for 3 nights for posterior repair and sacropinous fixation. I didn't feel it was long enough, and was back in within a week as I was bleeding. Just depends on how badly they need your bed I think.

Hi Jools

I went to a local private hospital on the NHS. Had the surgery for anterior and posterior repair at about 5pm and the next morning the drip was removed and at  lunchtime  had the wadding removed and the  catheter taken out after lunch. As i was able to pass urine OK I was allowed home about 7pm that evening. Had there been a problem I would have had to stay in for another night.Good Luck - hope all goes well. I'm now 9 weeks post op and beginning to feel human again!

Hi Jools, in UK it seems usual to stay 2 - 3 nights, but they will see how you are doing and how you are recovering.

Hi Jools

I had NHS op and I paid for private recovery ward.....booked in for two night but doc not happy to release me until I had a bm. So they gave me a third night for free😊. Two nights minimum I'd say then depends on your age, amount of surgery & stitches, what help your going home to etc. good luck

I only stayed in for one night, the noise on the ward drove me mental, the nurses who chat away like it's the middle of the day,the lady opposite who snored even more than hubby and the poor lady in the end bed who had things on her legs keeping her blood pressure normal but the noise was awful, was glad to go home to my own bed to get some rest

I'm in the U.S. and it was a minimum 24 watch. I had my surgery at 8am on a Friday and left the hospital Saturday evening.

Im in the US, in Indiana, and I was originally told it was a 3 hour outpatient surgery, but that was only if there were no complications at all and I wanted to go home, but that if I wanted to stay I could stay for 24 hours (which I will be) and I am having that and rectocele and I just think that is a lot of stuff to have with no complications so I plan on staying 1-3 days. Good luck!!!!

I'm in Kansas. That is crazy! I wasn't even really conscious until the next day.... plus the catheter and iv drips.

Hi Jools

I went in on Tues17th November at 5pm, had my op the following morning and came out Friday lunchtime, so 3 nights in total.  Had catheter removed on the second day.  I rested a lot, slept for what seemed like hours each day, and made sure I'd got lots of laxatives so my BM were eased.   Feeling fantastic now, although I am still being really careful and get the odd twinge if I attempt anything even a bit strentuous.  However sun was shining all day yesterday so I managed two hours of very light gardening, fresh air pn my face and felt fine.  Good luck.

Oh my. I go in the 17th for my last appointment before surgery. Is there anything I should ask about or request? And does the catheter hurt?? I have never had a catheter or been put under or had any type of surgery. The worst I had was stitches on my lips when I was 4, and 5 years ago I had an ingrown toenail that had to be taken out (which was horrible).
