staying myopic by choice after cataract operations

I have been 2-3 dioptres myopic all my life. When I had the cataract operation I asked the surgeon if I could stay myopic but he advised against it. Now the operations are over and my long distance sight is good, i still think it would have been more convenient for me to have continued to be about 2 dioptres myopic, then only needing glasses for distance and being able to lift them up or take them off to read or use the computer. My optometrist agrees with me, but unfortunately I did not see her before the operations. Does any one know, or understand, why surgeons resist the requests of moderately myopic clients (quite common according to my optometrist) to remain moderately myopic?

You could have had  multifocal or accommodating lenses to avoid the need for glasses. I think that the NHS allows you to pay the extra cost.

Hi  Peter,  I too have been short-sighted all my life (-5) and I requested that I remain under.  I have a friend who was much more short-sighted than me and had a catract operation that brought her up to full sight and she was totally miserable  She needed glasses for middle sight i.e. working in the kitchen and other glasses for closer work. She is never without glasses.  Her distance sight was great, she could see a fly on the wall, but we live in the middle/short range.  So I requested that I have one eye distance (but still under) and one even less strength, which they did, and it worked, but it is'nt perfect, nothing is as good as your own lens.

thanks, yes i did read about these but i got the impression there is some compromise in acuity and I didnt want to risk that.
