Has anyone had a good or bad experience with receiving a cortisone injection after having a fractured humerus? The bone has healed (no surgery needed), but, I still have limlited range of motion and my doctor mentioned a cortisone injection would alleviate this.
It's entirely possible that the injection could give you some relief. Has physical therapy been mentioned? Just getting that arm and those rotator cuff muscles and tendons moving could be the culprit. Best wishes to you. (I'm almost 4 months out from rotator cuff surgery and it's been a trying time, but it seems diligence and patience are finally paying off)
Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have been doing physical therapy and strength and range of motion have improved. The injection was mentioned to help me get the rest of the way. I am 12 weeks from my injury date.
Just not sure how to reply to that. Judgement call on the injection. I don't know what your pain is like. If you are experiencing mild pain, I would forego the injection. But that's me. I still have pain with my therapy, and other times. It still hurts and aches on its own just yet, but I wouldn't do the cortisone if I didnt have too.
Ok, thanks! My pain is much more tolerable now than it was a few weeks ago. I probably will not do the injection. I would like more range of motion though, will keep plodding along w/ stretches and exercises. Hopefully, they will help in the long run!
Icing seems to help. I wish you a total recovery. It's a long tedious process. but it gets better..
Hi there, we seem to be at a very similar stage. I suffered a spiral fracture to the top of my humerus 13 weeks ago. Healing has progressed well . I have had lots of Physio firstly to restore ROM and lately to strengthen. I have had some progress but like you would love more movement! Particularly keen to achieve more unassisted by pole or band. The Physio has been muttering about steroid injections. I still have quite a lot of pain coming down from lifts. It all seems endless!
Yes, it does take patience! I returned to work recently. I am a dental hygienist. My pain has increased , but, I feel this is part of the process of getting back to normal. Range of motion is more of a problem for me than the strength issue. I have been doing my own strength workouts as I can at the gym. The TRX is wonderful! and light dumbells.
Let me stress how very important your exercises with stretching are. Those are for your range of motion. I am 4 and a half months post. So important. I couldn't start strengthening right away due to the rotator cuff surgery. The pain has finally gotten SO much better. Now I'm comfortable starting my strength exercises. Patience is key with these darn shoulder surgeries. I'm convinced. But it is hard. Best wishes!
Thank you. Hope you continue to improve. You're right-patience is the key but it's hard with an approaching holiday and so much else I need to do and a next to useless arm!! I think the problem is that progress seems to have stalled with the ROM. I've achieved about 150 assisted and only 90-100 unassisted. I achieve about 45 sideways and 10 back!! This isn't very impressive and my physio is pushing/ motivating me to keep aiming for more! But you're right, I need to look at how far I've come since that trip in May and A and E.
