Hello, I’ve had a migraine that keeps coming back for the past 20 days or so. I’ve been taking zomig every day since which gets rid of it but it keeps coming back. My doctor wants me to take steroids to try and stop them or break the cycle. Has anyone else taken steroids before and what side effects did you have or did taking them work?

i have migraine for over 40years but not every day I have tried many preventative measures but nothing have really helped reduce the severity and frequency I have recently seen a head ache doctor specialist who suffers from migraine herself and can understand how awful they are and so debilitating. She recommended I go on nortriptyline 5mg which I can say has not helped the frequency but has helped with severity. But if your having migraines every day then is it actually migraine I assume you have been to doctors have had mri etc I take zomig which is my life saver as nothing else gets rid of it I have been taking that for years but onl y when i get an attack which is about on average 2 a week but I don’t like taking tablets and only if it’s ncessary you could be on the rebound headache syndrome which is something you have to break best to discuss this with your gp though but I must admit I haven’t been told about steroids I would be the first to be on a list if they did a magic cure for migraines I would make enquiries about that in fact I will google it now !!!

I've tried steroids and they don't work. You're not going to like this but talking from experience you HAVE to stop taking zomig and all other pain killers you may be taking. You will now be having rebound migraines and while you will probably have 1-3 fairly unbearable days it's the only way to stop this cycle.
Make sure you rest, over hydrate... 2-3 l of water a day and just dobyour best to let it lass naturally. I'd also.ost put money on it being gone after a few days meds free x
Im awaiting an implant to the head so the device can effect the Occipital nerve thus reducing the pain. I have been a sufferer since age of 10. My advice is to those taking CO-Codamol to withdraw as quick as possible and take in its place Tramadol, CO-Codamol triggers Migraines which when treated causing a secondary Migraine even a third with this repeating itself 24/7 five to 6 times in 24 hours. One will reduce and then other symptoms a rise like Aura, blindness and sickness with extreme pain unlike previous getting to the point blowing your brains out is a consideration at times. When you smile you cry even though your not depressed however these headaches bring you down. When folk appear on TV and say they get Migraine four times a month, I do envy them and question why are they even discussing it when there are sufferers 24/7 365 day a year with no respite and its not consider a disability , even when you go blind. Consultants are now offering injections into the Occipital nerve which reduces the pain for as long as it takes the drug or Botox to wear off. Also privately now is the new Migrain wonder injection which given once a month worked on 50 % of patients in trials, the is not available on the NHS yet but it can be given privately now the EU has allowed it. As always with your own medicines withdraw only under Doctors orders. Stay well all.

Yes, and it works to break the cycle for me MOST of the time....there are times it does but it worth a shot.
I suffer daily also, take Naratriptan not heard about taking steriods, I had an appointment at with the Neurologist, last week, did advise me to take withdraw all medications for 2 weeks, they then will try another medication cannot remember the name, the last time I withdrew I could not withstand the pain and ended in A&E, so not sure how this will go.

Let me just say up front, since I had a heart attack in Aug of 2016, I don't have many migraines anymore...not like before where I had them almost daily. So normally if the steroids work it is within a day or two...but I have to say the doctor would first give me a shot of Tramadol and then a steroid pack...it could be between the two I got relief. My neurologist gave me steroids and if I was having a migraine for a more than 4 days that the other drugs didn't help I am to take those for just three days. I am in the US and the last time I had a migraine for 20 days like you my insurance company demanded I was put in the hospital where they pumped me with all kinds of drugs...it worked for a while...
