Hi Bev - after 4 months my leg still gets stiff either first thing in the morning or after sitting a while and best thing for me is a hands on massage with any kind of oil/moisturiser, and gentle bending until the stiffness eases. Read in a post earlier today that the reason we all wake up every 2 hours or so is the body telling us to move so we don't stiffen up too much!!! Every cloud has its silver lining hey - will try to remember that next sleepless night I have!!
I find that sitting in a chair where my feet don't reach the ground, and kicking it up and then back as far as I can seems to loosen it up a bit. . . I try to do that 200 times a day . .sometimes all together, or sometimes in a couple of groups! You can do it slowly if the knee is still sore, or really let rip later on! I'm sure there will be ots of other ideas, and I shall be interested to read them too!
Definetly on the bottom step and pushing forward with operated leg hold for five to ten secs. Also standing and doing bent leg lifts. Calf stretches help too.

Hi Bev. I had a very stiff knee after my TKR, to relieve it I did stretches by putting my leg up on a chair and pressing down on the knee. Also, if you have steps this exercise is a life saver. Place your operative leg on the first step and bend it forward as far as you can, do this at least six to eight times you will see a difference. I am now 5 1/2 months post op, I have zero discomfort and zero stiffness. I honestly did not think I was going to be pain free, it just happens. Good luck in your recovery. This was a big surgery. You didn't mention how long ago your surgery was. Personally, I think the key is to not have it bent or straight too long. It takes a long time for everything to mend and heal up. I find having my legs straight out most helpful and intermitently bending them, walking around, doing some sort of modified squat. Even taking the stairs helps.
Do a bit of walking on it.
I'm afraid it is a question of no pain no gain.
You could ask a physiotherapist.
